Women's Basketball Bested 86-71 at Ferris State

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (14-6, 9-3 GLIAC) was defeated 86-71 at No. 21-ranked Ferris State University (16-4, 9-2 GLIAC) on Saturday in Jim Wink Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
Ferris State opened the game with an 8-2 run.  Four-straight points from McKenna Ferguson (Grandville, Mich. / Byron Center) cut the gap to two points.  Kadyn Blanchard (FSU) splashed a triple to push the Ferris State advantage to 11-6, but a 9-2 surge for the Warriors put the guests in front 15-13 with just under one minute remaining in the first frame. Five-straight points for the Bulldogs, including a buzzer-beating long ball that Elle Irwin banked in, gave FSU an 18-15 advantage after the first quarter

SECOND QUARTER
WSU slowed in the first half of the second quarter, as Ferris State tallied a 14-3 run for a 32-18 lead.  Four WSU points made it 32-22.  The Bulldogs responded with four points of their own to push the lead back to 14 (36-22).  Each squad tallied six points as FSU held a 42-28 lead after the second stanza.

THIRD QUARTER
The Green and Gold stormed back in the third quarter, beginning the frame with a 14-3 scoring rally to reel within three points (45-42) with seven minutes left in the penultimate quarter.  Ferris State notched the next five points to widen the gap, but a Gabi Lutchka (Grass Lake, Mich.) lay-up stopped the Bulldogs' attack.  FSU's Blanchard found the bottom of the net on another long-range jumper (53-44), but Wayne State knotted the contest at 53-53 after a triple by Ferguson, and back-to-back three pointers by Jaci Tubergen (Hudsonville, Mich. [Bowling Green]).  A pair of Lutchka free throws gave WSU a 55-53 advantage.  Wayne State edged the hosts 6-4 for a 61-57 advantage heading into the final quarter.

Lutchka contributed 13 points as the Warriors out-scored the Bulldogs 33-15 in the third period.
