Women's Soccer Improves To 9-1-3 With 1-0 Victory At Parkside

Gaul nets lone goal to back shutout performance by Helfen.

KENOSHA, Wis. -- The Wayne State University women's soccer team (9-1-3 overall, 5-1-3 GLIAC) ventured west for its first two-game road weekend of the season visiting the University of Wisconsin Parkside (6-5-2 overall, 4-4-1 GLIAC) on Friday afternoon.  After a scoreless first half, the Warriors tallied the only goal of the second half to post a 1-0 triumph.  The road victory improved WSU's mark away from the WSU Soccer Complex to 7-1-0.  Wayne State entered the match ranked No. 5 in the Midwest Region in this week's NCAA NPI rankings and No. 25 nationally.

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF
WSU had its first scoring chance as graduate student Mairin Wessner (Northville, Mich. [Dayton]) put a header on net just over 14 minutes into the match, Ranger goalkeeper Lindsey Ferrara was able to knock it away for a corner kick.

About 27 minutes into the match, Wessner took a left footed shot from just right of the PK spot, but the ball sailed wide left of the goal.

The best opportunity for the Rangers came in the final 25 seconds when a header off a cross went just wide of the net.

Wayne State had a 4-0 edge in corner kicks during the opening 45 minutes.

SECOND HALF
The Warriors grabbed a 1-0 lead with just over 23 minutes remaining in the match as redshirt senior Reagan Brengman (Harrison Township, Mich. Warren Regina [Northwood]) took a free kick from almost midfield that was stopped by Ferrara, but freshman Sabrina Gaul (Troy, Mich.) was able to put in the rebound for her first collegiate goal and become the ninth WSU player to score this fall.  Brengman garnered her second assist of the campaign.

GOALKEEPER INFORMATION
Redshirt sophomore Kate Helfen (Troy, Mich. [Cincinnati]) made her 12th start of the season and stopped all three Parkside shots to record her sixth clean sheet of the campaign.

Ferrara was credited with seven saves as the Warriors outshot the hosts 19-9 overall, including an 8-4 margin in shots on goal.

WSU also had a 7-2 edge in corner kicks in the match.

The win was Wayne State's first on Friday since a 2-1 triumph at Ferris State on Sept. 11.  Since then, the Warriors tied Purdue Northwest (2-2 at home on September 18), tied Northern Michigan (1-1 at home on September 25) and tied Saginaw Valley State (0-0 at home on October 9).

UP NEXT
Wayne State will continue its weekend road trip with a Sunday match at Roosevelt.  Kick-off is slated for noon Central time (1 PM Eastern) at RU's Morris Field in Arlington Heights, Ill.
