Women's Soccer Blanks Grand Valley State 2-0

Wessner and Carrico net goals, while Mroue earns two assists.

DETROIT -- The historic inaugural season for the Wayne State University women's soccer program (11-1-3 overall, 7-1-3 GLIAC) continued on Friday afternoon with a 2-0 triumph over visiting Grand Valley State University (8-3-4 overall, 6-2-3 GLIAC) at the WSU Soccer Complex.  The Warriors entered the match ranked No. 25 nationally (and No. 5 in the Midwest Region) based on the latest NPI Rankings, while the Lakers were No. 27 nationally and No. 6 in the Midwest Region).

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
The Lakers had an early corner kick after which Cora Conley put a shot on goal following a Wayne State clear.  After making the save, WSU goalkeeper sophomore Kate Helfen (Troy, Mich. [Cincinnati]) sent a pass to rookie left back Morgan Wilcox (Imlay City, Mich. / Lapeer).  Wilcox's long ball found freshman Sienna Mroue (Dearborn, Mich.) down the left side.  Mroue cut to the net and blasted a shot which was stopped by GVSU 'keeper Macie Hunter, but graduate student Mairin Wessner (Northville, Mich. [Dayton]) was able to bury the rebound just 1:52 into the match for her seventh goal of the campaign.  Mroue earned her fourth assist of the season, while Wilcox notched her second helper.

With just over 10 minutes remaining in the opening half, sophomore Jenna Moeller (Center Line, Mich. Warren Regina [Siena Heights]) corralled the ball on the offensive half and played it back to Wilcox.  After Mroue took a pass from Wilcox, she nutmegged a Laker defender and came down the left side making a left footed cross which a sliding Kate Carrico (Brighton, Mich. Brighton [Western Michigan]) was able to finish for the first collegiate goal for the redshirt freshman.  Mroue tallied her second assist of the contest on the insurance goal.

Helfen made another save in the final three minutes before intermission, and just two minutes after Hunter stopped a long shot by senior captain Reagan Brengman (Harrison Township, Mich. Warren Regina [Northwood]).

Second Half
The visiting Lakers applied the pressure in the second half attempting eight shots, five of which were on goal.

Helfen turned aside two GVSU shots in the first eight minutes after halftime to maintain the two-goal advantage.  She made another stop with just under 20 minutes elapsed in the second half.

The Grand Valley State push continued with Helfen making two saves on shots by Sarah Fromm less than 6:30 apart.

GOALKEEPER INFORMATION
Helfen garnered her eighth clean sheet of the season, lowered her goals-against average to 0.57 in 1260 minutes and improved her record to 10-1-3.  The seven saves were a career-high.

Hunter was credited with two saves, both in the first half.

NOTES
Wayne State becomes the first school to defeat GVSU twice in a season since Parkside in 2004 (GLIAC regular-season and NCAA Tournament).
