Women's Soccer Battles Saginaw Valley State to 2-2 Draw

The Warriors scored once in each half before a late own goal secured the 2-2 result.

Box Score UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw against Saginaw Valley State on Sunday.  The Warriors moved to 11-1-4 overall and 7-1-4 in GLIAC play, remaining in sole possession of first place in the conference standings.  The Cardinals are now 8-6-2 overall and 6-4-2 in league play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF
Saginaw Valley State opened the scoring at 16:13 when Abby Ellis sent a shot low to the left side of the goal.  Emily Kolodin was credited with the assist as the Cardinals took a 1-0 lead.

The Warriors responded at 33:01 when Sienna Mroue (Dearborn, Mich.) set up Kate Carrico (Brighton, Mich. [Western Michigan]), who put a shot low into the center of the goal to even the score at 1-1.  The goal was Carrico's second of the season, and she has now scored in consecutive games after finding the back of the net in Wayne State's 2-0 win over Grand Valley State on Friday.

The teams continued to battle but remained tied at 1-1 heading into halftime.

SECOND HALF
Wayne State took its only lead of the afternoon at 55:57 when Reagan Brengman (Harrison Township, Mich. / Warren Regina [Northwood]) found Mroue off a free kick just outside the box.  Mroue finished with a shot to the lower-left side of the goal to put the Warriors ahead 2-1.

Saginaw Valley State found a late equalizer at 88:58 on a Wayne State own goal, bringing the score to 2-2.  Neither team was able to find a winner before the final whistle.

GOALKEEPER INFORMATION
Kate Helfen (Troy, Mich. [Cincinnati]) played all 90 minutes in goal for Wayne State and recorded seven saves, tying her career-high.

Saginaw Valley State goalkeeper Ava Wilberding also played the full match, making six saves.

UP NEXT
The Warriors will host Michigan Tech on Thursday, Oct. 29, at 3 p.m. at the WSU Soccer Complex for their second-to-last GLIAC regular-season match.  WSU needs just one win in its final two matches, or two draws to secure a home GLIAC quarterfinal game on Nov. 3.
