Soccer Falls 1-0 At Davenport To End Unbeaten Streak At Nine

CALEDONIA, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's soccer squad (7-1-2 overall, 3-1-2 GLIAC) was blanked 1-0 at Davenport University (5-3-3 overall, 3-3-1 GLIAC) on Sunday afternoon.  It was WSU's first setback of the season after going unbeaten in its first nine matches.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
The host Panthers struck just under five minutes into the match.  A long throw-in went off a WSU head to Sofia Capoccia who knocked the ball down and Natalie Vance put her shot from just a few feet off the goal line into the lower right corner past Wayne State goalkeeper Kate Helfen (Troy, Mich. [Cincinnati]).

The rest of the opening 45 minutes was mostly uneventful as the Warriors totaled nine shot attempts (two on goal), while DU had four total shot attempts with Helfen making one save.  WSU had four corner kicks to one for DU.  There were only three fouls called in the first half - two to Davenport and one to Wayne State.

Second Half
Freshman Sabrina Gaul (Troy, Mich.) had a scoring opportunity with just over 28 minutes left in the contest after a nice pass from junior Jess Clyde (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron [Schoolcraft C.C.]) but Panther goalkeeper Elizabeth Wolter made the save.

About three minutes later Clyde took a penalty kick but her shot to the lower left corner was stopped by Wolter.

Wayne State kept the pressure and forced Wolter to make a couple of more saves, including one on a shot by graduate student Mairin Wessner (Northville, Mich. [Dayton]) in the final 30 seconds.

WSU finished with an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks, along with 16 shot attempts to DU's 12.  The Warriors also had seven shots on goal to the Panthers three.

Both Wessner and freshman Sienna Mroue (Dearborn, Mich.) had two shots on goal for Wayne State.

GOALKEEPER INFORMATION
Helfen suffered her first loss of the season as she was credited with two saves.  Meanwhile, Wolter stopped seven Warrior shots, including five in the second half.
