Women's Tennis to Host Findlay

DETROIT -- The No. 22-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis team returns to action on Saturday, February 14, to host the University of Findlay in the Doris J. and Donald L. Duchene, Sr. Athletic Facility.

LAST TIME OUT
WSU collected a 7-0 home win over Walsh University last Friday (Feb. 6), to begin its regular season.

In doubles, Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) and Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) nabbed a win in the No. 1 position, while the freshman duo of Selin Kayakent (Bursa, Turkey) and Rebecca Laynes (Saginaw, Mich. / Heritage) tallied a victory in No. 3 doubles. The Warriors did not falter in singles to post the win.

SCOUTING THE OILERS
Findlay is the No. 16-ranked squad in the country according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) and was picked to win the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) ahead of the season. UF has posted a 2-1 ledger with the only loss being a 4-2 defeat at #19-Grand Valley State. The Oilers have collected wins over Illinois Springfield and Ferris State.

Five All-G-MAC honorees from last year have returned, including First-Team selections Anamarija Kovacevic and Polina Zaytseva, along with Second-Team recipients Ivanova Lucero, Audrey Ouellet, and Valentina Salek. Zaytseva was named the conference's Freshman of the Year, while head coach Jeff Westmeyer was tabbed as the Coach of the Year.

Westmeyer has guided the women's squad to a 78-34 mark since taking the helm during the 2020-21 season. During his tenure, he has helped the team advance to the NCAA Midwest Regional in each of the last four seasons, and as previously mentioned has been named G-MAC Coach of the Year once.
