Men's Tennis Posts 6-1 Triumph Over Fairmont State

CHARLESTON, WV -- The No. 23-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis team (3-1 overall) collected a 6-1 win against Fairmont State University (3-1 overall) on Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
WSU nabbed two doubles wins to claim the 1-0 lead in the match.

In the No. 2 position, George Day (Southampton, United Kingdom / Peter Symonds College) and Thomas Mathys (Grimisuat, Switzerland / ECCG - Martigny) defeated FSU's duo of Gabriel Masu and Keagan Karunagaran 6-2.

Tom Wasner (Altenholz, Germany / Friedrichsort Community School) and Sam Knowles (North Shields, Tyne and Wear, England / King's Priory School) earned a 6-2 win over Mohamed Mostafa Moens and Gustavo Masu in the No. 3 doubles.

Harry Forsyth (Wamberal, New South Wales, Australia / The McDonald College [Mississippi College]) and Luis Klaus (Brühl, Germany / Archbishop's St. Ursula gymnasium [TH Köln]) were bested 7-6 by Noah Liedtke and Haruto Kusunoki in the top flight.

SINGLES
Day downed Liedtke 6-4, 6-2, as the pair battled in the No. 1 singles position.

In No. 2 singles, Klaus continued perform, this time defeating Haruto Kusunoki in three sets.  The WSU student-athlete fell 6-1 in the opening set before earning 6-2, 6-3 wins in the second and third to claim victory.

Wasner, in the third singles, triumphed 6-4 over FSU's Karunagaran before falling 6-4 in the second.  The sophomore Warrior won 10-8 in the third for the win.

Mathys impressed in No. 5 singles, defeating Mostafa Moens 6-2, 6-1.

Forsyth, in the No. 6 position, downed Jasper de Bruijn 6-4, 6-3.

Benjamin Hill (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany / Burgau-Gymnasium) fell 7-6, 1-6, 10-12 in the No. 4 slot to Gustavo Masu.

UP NEXT
The men's tennis team will face te University of Charleston tomorrow, February 21, at the Carleston Tennis Club.  The match is set to begin at 4:00 PM.
