KENOSHA, Wis. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (20-6, 15-3 GLIAC) nabbed a 63-54 road win at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside (13-13, 8-10 GLIAC) on Saturday. The win marks the second-consecutive 20-win season for WSU, and fifth under the direction of
Carrie Lohr.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
Four-straight points for the hosts gave UWP a 4-0 advantage to begin the game. A lay-in by
Karrington Gordon (Lincoln Park, Mich. [Central Michigan University]) followed by a jumper by
McKenna Ferguson (Grandville, Mich. / Byron Center) knotted the contest. Parkside's Alli Hampel found the bottom of the net to put the Rangers back on top 6-4. The Warriors rattled an 8-0 run to gain a 12-6 advantage with just under six minutes remaining. UWP made a pair of baskets to pull within two points (12-10). The Green and Gold ended the quarter with a 5-2 run, holding a 17-2 lead after the first stanza.
SECOND QUARTER
Wayne State scored the first four points of the second frame, and eight of the first 10 for a 25-14 lead. A triple by Lexi Bugajski (UWP) prompted a 10-2 run for the Rangers, as the home team shortened the gap to three (27-24) heading into the halftime intermission.
THIRD QUARTER
The Warriors tallied seven-consecutive points to open the third period. The Rangers responded with six-straight points to pull within four points (34-30) with 5:43 remaining.
Mackenzie Miller (Schoolcraft, Mich. [Lakeland University]) contributed five-consecutive points to extend WSU's lead to nine points. The teams went back-and-forth, with UWP slightly edging the Green and Gold 9-8 to close the third quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER
Cassidy Arni (UWP) converted an and-one to open the final period. Five Green and Gold points extended WSU's advantage to 10 points (52-42). A 10-4 run for the Warriors pushed the advantage to 16 points (62-46). Parkside notched an 8-1 spurt to close the game, but WSU prevailed 63-54.
TEAM STATISTICS
WSU shot 22-of-53 from the floor (41.5 percent), including 7-of-21 from deep (33.3 percent). Parkside connected on 31.3 percent of attempts (21-of-67), including 4-of-28 from long range 914.3 percent). At the charity stripe, Wayne State made 12-of-17 (70.6 percent), while UWP was 8-of-11 (72.7 percent). The Warriors nabbed 45 rebounds to the host's 35.
LEADING THE WARRIORS
Gabi Lutchka (Grass Lake, Mich.) led all scorers with 20 points (6-of-14 FG, 5-of-9 3PT, 3-of-4 FT), while adding six rebounds. Ferguson nearly posted a double-double with 17 points and a team-best nine boards.
Taylor Thompson (Grand Blanc, Mich.) dished out a team-high four assists.
LEADING THE RANGERS
Bugajski had a squad-best 13 points, alongside six boards. Alli Hampel grabbed a game-leading 10 rebounds, to go with eight points. Arni posted 12 points, five boards, and three helpers.
