Women's Tennis Downs Saginaw Valley State 6-1 in First GLIAC Match

MIDLAND, Mich. -- The No. 22-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis team (2-1, 1-0 GLIAC) defeated Saginaw Valley State University (2-3, 0-1 GLIAC) 6-1 on Thursday at the Greater Midland Tennis Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
The Green and Gold swept all three doubles matches to claim the first point of the match.

At the No. 1 position, Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que. / Collège de Montréal High School) and Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland / Sopocka Akademia Tenisowa) nabbed a 6-4 win over Fatimah Butt and Nicoletta Diamantopoulos.

The pairing of Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt / Lycée Français d'Alexandrie) and Selin Kayakent (Bursa, Turkey / Bilfen Anatolian) posted a 6-2 triumph against Amelia Dickson and Lydia Liong Tng En while battling in the second doubles spot.

Shantala Uzcategui (Hoyo de La Puerta, Venezuela / Unidad Educativa Colegio Madre Matilde [Walsh]) and Rebecca Laynes (Saginaw, Mich. / Heritage) were the pair at No. 3 doubles, collecting a victory over Anastasia Diamantopoulos and Katie Lucke, besting the SVSU pair 7-5.

SINGLES
Arafat, in the top singles flight, defeated Nicoletta Diamantopoulos 6-3, 7-5 in straight sets.

At the No. 2 singles position, Szpakowska earned a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Saginaw Valley State's Dickson.

Freshman Kayakent continued her strong rookie campaign, downing Anastasia Diamantopoulos 6-2, 6-1 in the third slot.

Beaulieu battled with Lydia Liong Tng En in the No. 4 singles position, posting a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victory.

Uzcategui collected a 6-3, 6-2 win in the No. 5 singles spot, prevailing over SVSU's Fatimah Butt.

Laynes fell in the No. 6 singles position, as Natalie Schoenherr defeated the WSU student-athlete 6-1, 6-1.

UP NEXT
The women's tennis team will dip back into non-conference action this weekend, hosting Hillsdale on Saturday, February 28. at 12:00 PM.
