Women's Tennis Bests Hillsdale 4-3 at Home

DETROIT -- The No. 22-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis team (3-1 overall) collected a 4-3 in-region win over Hillsdale College (5-3 overall) on Saturday in the Doris J. & Donald L. Duchene, Sr. Athletic Facility.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
Hillsdale struck first, prevailing in two of the three doubles matches for a 1-0 lead.

In the top flight, Martyna Szpakowska ((Gdansk, Poland / Sopocka Akademia Tenisowa) and Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que. / Collège de Montréal High School) posted a 7-6 (7-2) win over HC's pairing of Ane Dannhauser and Megan Hackman.

Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt / Lycée Français d'Alexandrie) and Selin Kayakent (Bursa, Turkey / Bilfen Anatolian) were bested by Briana Rees and Dimitra Papastavrou in a highly-contests 7-5 match in the No. 2 position.

The duo of Rebecca Laynes (Saginaw, Mich. / Heritage) and Shantala Uzcategui (Hoyo de La Puerta, Venezuela / Unidad Educativa Colegio Madre Matilde [Walsh]) saw action in the third slot, falling 6-4 to Julia Zlateva and Isabella Spinazze.

SINGLES
The Warriors responded in singles, as Arafat posted a 6-3, 7-5 triumph over 2024-25 First Team All-G-MAC selection Ane Dnnhauser in the No. 1 position.

Szapkowska fell 6-3 in her first set to Rees, but rallied to earn a 6-1 win in the second and a 6-4 victory in the third set in the No. 2 singles slot.

Kayakent continued her strong freshman campaign, earning a 6-2, 6-1 win in the No. 3 singles slot over HC's Hackman.

Beaulieu competed against Papastavrou in the fourth flight, besting the Charger 6-2, 6-2.

Uzcategui suffered a 6-4, 6-2 defeat to Zlateva in the No. 5 position, while Laynes was downed 6-1, 6-2 by Esther Sura in the sixth singles spot.

The women's tennis squad will next be in action on Thursday, March 12, as the Green and Gold will take on Keiser University at 2:00 PM in West Palm Beach, Fla.
