Women's Basketball Clinches No. 2 Seed With 94-78 Victory Over SVSU

Lutchka and Thompson combine for 48 points and 16 assists.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (22-6 overall, 17-3 GLIAC) closed out its 2025-26 regular season with a 94-78 triumph against Saginaw Valley State University (7-21 overall, 5-15 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon at the WSU Fieldhouse.  The Warriors earned the No. 2 seed for the upcoming GLIAC tournament and will host Roosevelt in a GLIAC Quarterfinal match-up at 5:30 PM on Wednesday, March 4 at the WSU Fieldhouse.

The win was also the 250th in head coach Carrie Lohr's Wayne State career.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
WSU scored the first eight points of the contest on a triple by senior by Gabi Lutchka (Grass Lake, Mich.), a lay-up by classmate Mackenzie Miller (Schoolcraft, Mich. [Lakeland University]) and three consecutive points by senior Taylor Thompson (Grand Blanc, Mich.).

SVSU's Lydia Meredith scored the first points for the visitors with 5:15 left in the opening stanza.  A bucket by graduate student Karrington Gordon (Lincoln Park, Mich. [Central Michigan]) followed by two free throws and a triple by junior McKenna Ferguson (Grandville, Mich. / Byron Center) increased the advantage to 13 at 15-2.  An 8-2 run by the Cardinals cut the Wayne State margin to seven (17-10), before a 9-0 spurt by Wayne State to conclude the period.  

The Warriors led 26-10 as Gordon drained a shot from beyond the arc in the waning seconds.

Second Quarter
WSU led by 17 (29-12 and 29-14) in the first 62 seconds before the guests drained back-to-back long-range shots to pull within 11 (31-20) with 7:52 remaining in the first half.  

SVSU was within 10 on two occasions (34-24 and 36-26), prior to WSU going on a 9-2 run to lead by 17 (45-28) with 2:13 left before intermission.  The Cardinals had a 6-4 scoring edge leading into halftime.  Wayne State led 49-34 after 20 minutes after shooting 63 percent (19-of-30) from the floor, including 6-of-11 (54.5 percent) from three-point range.  Thompson tallied a game-best 13 points and was +19 during the first 20 minutes, while Lutchka totaled 12 points.

Third Quarter
Wayne State scored the first eight points of the second half, including five from Thompson and a triple by Lutchka to extend the lead to 23 (57-34).  SVSU answered with 11 straight points to cut the WSU advantage to 12 (57-45). 

A 16-6 run by the Warriors concluded a on shot from beyond the arc by junior Emily Homan (Haslett, Mich.) with 41 seconds left in the stanza.  Wayne State had a 73-54 lead after 30 minutes. 

Fourth Quarter
Saginaw Valley State was able to cut its deficit to 14 on two occasions (79-65 and 81-67), but WSU finished the contest out-scoring the guests 13-11 over the final 5:30. 

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 58 percent (34-of-59) from the floor, the ninth time this season the Warriors have shot at least 50 percent in a game.  WSU was 12-of-21 (57 percent) from beyond the arc and 14-of-16 (88 percent) at the foul line.  SVSU was 28-of-68 (41 percent) from the field, and 10-of-34 (29 percent) from three-point range.  The Cardinals made 12 of 18 foul shots (67 percent).  Wayne State had a 38-29 edge in rebounding.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Lutchka connected on 6-of-7 triple tries in scoring a game-high 26 points.  Thompson nearly had a double-double with 22 points and a game-best nine rebounds.  Gordon contributed 12 points, while Ferguson chipped in with 16 points.  Homan distributed a game-high five assists.

LEADING THE CARDINALS
Lydia Meredith scored a team-best 18 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.  Emma Dziezgowski drained four triples in scoring 17 points.  Lainey Yater had four assists.

Wayne State will host Roosevelt in a GLIAC Quarterfinal match-up at 5:30 PM on Wednesday, March 4 at the WSU Fieldhouse.
