Women's Tennis Suffers 7-0 Setback at Keiser

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- The No. 41-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis team (3-2 overall) fell 7-0 at top-ranked (NAIA) Keiser University on Thursday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
The Seahawks earned the doubles point after posting a pair of wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 positions.

Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt / Lycée Français d'Alexandrie) and Selin Kayakent (Bursa, Turkey / Bilfen Anatolian) bested Ella Sahins and Aline Aveiro 6-1 in the No. 2 doubles slot.

At the top flight, the pairing of Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que. / Collège de Montréal High School) and Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland / Sopocka Akademia Tenisowa) was defeated by Violet Apisah and Patricia Apisah, the No. 2-ranked NAIA doubles duo, 6-1.

Shantala Uzcategui (Hoyo de La Puerta, Venezuela / Unidad Educativa Colegio Madre Matilde [Walsh])) and Rebecca Laynes (Saginaw, Mich. / Heritage) were thwarted in the No. 3 spot by Alexandra Melnikova and Lena Couto, 6-2.

SINGLES
After losing the first set to Violet Apisah 6-2, Arafat regrouped for 6-4 win in the second.  However, the WSU student-athlete fell in the super tiebreaker 10-4.

Szpakowska was defeated by Melnikova 6-2, 6-1 in the second flight, while Kayakent fell 6-0, 6-3 to Patricia Apisah in the third.

Beaulieu suffered a 6-2, 6-1 falter at the hands of Sahins in the No. 4 singles position.

Uzcategui battled with Couto in the fifth singles spot, nabbing the first set 6-4 before falling 6-2, 10-7 in the ensuing two.

Laynes was bested 6-3, 6-1 by Aveiro in the No. 6 singles slot.

The women's tennis team returns to action tomorrow, Mach 13, at No. 38-ranked Flagler College, at 10:00 AM.
