Men's Tennis Defeats Walsh to Start 2026 Spring Campaign

DETROIT -- The No. 23-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis team (1-0 overall) prevailed 6-1 over Walsh University (3-1 overall) on Friday in the Doris J. & Donald L. Duchene, Sr. Athletic Facility.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
The Warriors nabbed two of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead over the guests.

In the No. 1 position, Luis Klaus (Brühl, Germany / Archbishop's St. Ursula gymnasium [TH Köln]) and Harry Forsyth (Wamberal, New South Wales, Australia / The McDonald College [Mississippi College]) topped Walsh's Joan Dasi and Ross Trias Monells 6-1.

The duo of George Day (Southampton, United Kingdom / Peter Symonds College) and Thomas Mathys (Grimisuat, Switzerland / ECCG - Martigny) earned a 6-3 win over Lukas Kohler and Ethan Milgan in No. 2 doubles.

Sam Knowles (North Shields, Tyne and Wear, England / King's Priory School) and Tom Wasner (Altenholz, Germany / Friedrichsort Community School) fell in the No. 3 doubles 6-4 at the hands of Ben Hoffmann and Nicolas Strohle.

SINGLES
In No. 1 singles, Day fell in the opening set to Trias Monells 6-4 and found himself trailing 4-0 in the second.  The sophomore rallied to win the second set 6-4 to force a third.  In the final set, the 2024-25 All-GLIAC selection prevailed 6-2.

Benjamin Hill (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany / Burgau-Gymnasium) saw action in the No. 2 position, winning the first set 6-2, before falling in the second 6-1.  Hill nabbed a 6-4 win in the third set, topping Dasi.

Klaus was surgical in the third spot, defeating Nicolas Strohle 6-1, 6-1.

Mathys competed in the No. 4 position against Kohler.  The freshman prevailed 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) over the Walsh student-athlete.

Knowles saw action in No. 5 singles, falling 4-6, 6-2, 7-10 to Ethan Milgan.

Forsyth closed the match, besting Fedor Kuznetsov 3-6, 6-1, 10-7

UP NEXT
The men's tennis team will travel to Toledo, Ohio, to face the University of Toledo on Friday, February 13, in the Shadow Valley Tennis Club.
