Men's Tennis Bests Case Western Reserve 5-2

DETROIT -- The No. 20-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis team defeated No. 5-ranked (Division III) Case Western Reserve University 5-2 on Sunday at the Doris J. & Donald L. Duchene, Sr. Athletic Facility.

CWRU has been dominant at the D3 level, reaching the National Championship in four of the last five seasons, including winning the National Championship during the 2022-23 campaign.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
George Day (Southampton, United Kingdom / Peter Symonds College) and Thomas Mathys (Grimisuat, Switzerland / ECCG - Martigny) posted a 6-2 triumph at No. 2 doubles to improve their duo's ledger to 6-1 this spring.

The No. 1 and No. 3 positions were both battles, with each match requiring a tiebreaker to conclude.

At the top flight, Harry Forsyth (Wamberal, New South Wales, Australia / The McDonald College [Mississippi College]) and Luis Klaus (Brühl, Germany / Archbishop's St. Ursula gymnasium [TH Köln]) went back-and-forth with Bryce Ware and Trey Lambright, eventually falling 7-6 (7-5).

Benjamin Hill (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany / Burgau-Gymnasium) and Sam Knowles (North Shields, Tyne and Wear, England / King's Priory School) jumped out to an early 4-1 lead, but the CWRU pairing of Rohit Jain and Rowan Matorin rallied back to knot the match at 6-6.  The Case Western Reserve duo prevailed 7-6 in the tiebreak, clinching the doubles point for the guests.

SINGLES
Day nabbed a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Santiago Salazar Garza in the top singles flight.

At No. 2 singles, Klaus prevailed 7-5, 6-3 against Jon Totorica (No. 36-ranked D3 singles player).

Mathys had a strong showing in the No. 3 position, besting Josh Davydov 6-3, 6-3.

Hill was smooth in the No. 4 singles position, earning a 7-5, 6-1 triumph over JT Bilski.

Forsyth collected a 6-1, 6-2 win over Konrad Kwiatkowski in the No. 5 spot.

Warren Gunnar (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Ann Arbor Huron) got the nod at the No. 6 position.  The freshman rallied back from deficits in both sets but eventually fell 6-4, 7-5 to Rowan Matorin.

The Warriors will next be in action on Wednesday, March 11, as the squad faces St. Thomas Aquinas in Orlando, Fla.
