Baseball Outlasts St. Cloud State, 6-5, in 15-Inning Marathon

The Warriors played their longest game since a similar 15-inning affair on March 11, 2021.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- In a game lasting four hours and 15 minutes, the Wayne State University baseball squad (12-2 overall) utilized a two-run shot by Drew Hill (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) in the 15th inning to down St. Cloud State (8-9 overall) 6-5 on Tuesday afternoon.  The Warriors will have little time to recover as they will be back on the diamond for game three of their Spring Break trip on Wednesday morning against Winona State at 10 a.m.

The contest comes almost exactly five years to the day of WSU's last 15-inning game, which was on March 11, 2021, against Thomas University of the NAIA.  The Green and Gold also won that day by a 9-8 score.  That was also the last time a Wayne State affair went past 12 innings.

Both teams scored a pair of runs in the opening frame, before going scoreless in the following three innings.  WSU opened the scoring immediately via a solo home run by Ty Garza (Grosse Ile, Mich. [Barton College]) on the third pitch of the ballgame, which was his first of the 2026 campaign.  The Warriors added another run when Tony Hatzigeorgiou (Oxford, Mich.) singled home Rhett Roeser (New Baltimore, Mich. / Warren De La Salle).

The Green and Gold broke through again in the 5th inning to claim a 3-2 advantage.  This time, it was Bennett Hitzelberger's (Richmond, Mich.) turn to go deep, as the junior sent one out to right field for his third of the season.

St. Cloud State and WSU would trade runs with one another in the bottom of the 6th (SCSU), top of the 7th (WSU), and bottom of the 9th (SCSU), which would lead to two more ties and another Warrior lead.  Wayne State's run in the 7th came on a Garza single bringing in Brayden Crowe (Brighton, Mich. / Hartland) thanks to an error by the St. Cloud State left fielder.  Crowe had walked to reach base.

The Huskies knotted the score at 4-4 on a wild pitch after they were down to their final strike.  St. Cloud State worked a pair of walks to extend the game prior to that point.

Frames 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14 all passed with just one runner combined reaching second base.  That led to Hill's heroics in the top of the 15th following a lead-off walk by Owen Tuccinardi (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline)  It was also his third home run of the year.  SCSU would earn one back with a ground out to plate its 5th run, but it would not be enough to extend the game any further.

Tuesday's contest featured 11 pitchers and 463 pitches thrown combined between the two combatants.  The staffs also combined for a grand total of 16 walks and 29 strikeouts.  WSU received a strong start from Gabe Nazelli (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Detroit Country Day), who tossed the first six frames and allowed three runs for a quality start.  The graduate student punched out five over his 90 pitches.

In relief, Phillip Miller (Flat Rock, Mich. / Woodhaven [Schoolcraft C.C. / Tusculum]) went 2.2 innings with one hit, one run, and three walks allowed along with four strikeouts.  Jack Saputo (Windsor, Ont. / St. Anne Catholic [Macomb C.C.]) helped keep the game tied through extra innings via 3.1 frames of perfect relief as he did not allow a base runner.

Ethan Getting (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Portage Northern [Purdue Northwest]) pitched two more perfect innings (the 13th and 14th) and earned his first victory of the season, while Joel Mator (Trenton, Mich.) collected the first save of his young collegiate career in just his second career appearance.  The freshman was thrown into the fire after Getting walked the first two batters of the bottom of the 15th and shut the door on the Wildcats by recording the final three outs.

Overall, the bullpen quartet allowed just one hit combined over their nine innings of work, with nine strikeouts to their credit.
