Women's Tennis Falls Short Against Flagler, 4-3

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The No. 41-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis team (3-3 overall) fell 4-3 to No. 38-ranked Flagler College (4-6 overall).  The match started on Friday, March 13, but was postponed due to inclement weather following doubles.  Competition resumed on Saturday, March 14.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
Before the stoppage, WSU had nabbed the doubles points, winning two matches to clinch.

At the No. 1 position, Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que. / Collège de Montréal High School) and Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland / Sopocka Akademia Tenisowa) thwarted Sofia Balsera and Eryka Kruk 6-3.

The duo of Selin Kayakent (Bursa, Turkey / Bilfen Anatolian) and Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt / Lycée Français d'Alexandrie) prevailed 6-2 over FC's Lea Jakic and Marie Fairier.

Rebecca Laynes (Saginaw, Mich. / Heritage) and Shantala Uzcategui (Hoyo de La Puerta, Venezuela / Unidad Educativa Colegio Madre Matilde [Walsh]) were trailing Elena Ondobo and Ornella Lomenzo 5-2 before the match went unfinished.

SINGLES
In the No. 2 singles position, Szpakowska fell in the first set to Ondobo 6-3, before posting a 7-5 win in the second and a 6-3 triumph in the third.

Freshman Kayakent won a hard-fought match over Fairier 7-6 (10-8), 7-6 (7-4), as both sets required a tiebreaker.

Arafat lost her first set to Kruk 7-6 before rallying for a 7-5 triumph in the second at the No. 1 position.  The WSU student-athlete was downed 6-0 in the third set.

Beaulieu was defeated at the fourth singles spot 6-2, 7-5 by Balsera.

Uzcategui faced Jakic in the No. 5 singles spot, falling 6-4, 6-2.

Laynes saw action at the No. 6 singles spot, being defeated 6-1, 6-1 by Lomenzo.

The Warriors will face No. 7-ranked Nova Southeastern tomorrow, March 15, at 10:00 AM at the NSU Tennis Complex at Rolling Hills.
