Softball Wins Twice On First Day Of Spring Break Trip

WSU wins 8-1 vs. Mercy, and 4-3 over Thomas More in eight innings.

MELBOURNE, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball squad (6-5 overall) won both games on the first day of its spring break trip in very different fashion.  The Warriors led from start to finish in an 8-1 triumph over Mercy University (0-2) in the opener.  In the nightcap, WSU defeated in-region opponent Thomas More (7-12 overall) 4-3 in eight innings.

GAME ONE RECAP
Wayne State scored twice in the top of the first against the Mavericks.  Sophomore shortstop Hunter Near (Coopersville, Mich.) walked on four pitches, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and later scored another wild pitch.  Freshman right fielder Brooke Bunch (Almont, Mich.) walked, went to second on the aforementioned second wild pitch, advanced to third on a fielder's choice and scored on a ground out by junior Molly Hool (Allen Park, Mich.).

MU tallied its lone run in the bottom of the first after the first two batters were retired.  Averi Miller singled, went to second on a throwing error, stole third and scored on an infield single by Julianna Coluccio.

The Warriors extended their lead in fourth as Molly Hool reached on an error, moved to third on a single by older sister Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) and scored on a wild pitch.  Maddie Hool had stolen second, went to third on the aforementioned wild pitch, and scored after the Maverick second baseman caught a blooper and tried to double off the WSU runner at second base.

Wayne State erupted for four runs in the fifth.  Sophomore third baseman Kate DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) had a leadoff double, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a one-out triple by Maddie Hool.  Junior center fielder Mia Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) doubled in her older sister to make it 6-1.  Mia Hool later scored on a throwing error and sophomore left fielder Julia Sandles (Macomb, Mich. / Dakota) came around to score the game's final run.  Sandles scored all the way from first on a double by Near.

IN THE CIRCLE
Sophomore Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) allowed just one unearned run on three hits in a complete game performance.  She struck out two and did not walk a batter to improve to 2-0.

Carly Gaffney (0-1) walked all three batters she faced with two of them scoring.  Mya Marelli worked 4.2 innings and allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks.  Juliana Abbene hurled the final 2.1 innings allowing one hit with one strikeout.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Maddie Hool and Julia Sandles each had two hits, with Maddie Hool scoring twice.

LEADING THE MAVERICKS
Coluccio had two of MU's three hits and the lone RBI.

GAME TWO RECAP
Thomas More broke a scoreless draw with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth.  Haylee Palmer doubled in Ashtyn Elbe with the game's first run.  Palmer moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly by Brooklyn Couch.

WSU evened the score in the bottom of the frame and junior pitcher Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) had a leadoff double and scored on a two-run home run by high school teammate Kate DeWitt on a 3-2 offering.

Wayne State took a 3-2 lead in the fifth as Near had a leadoff single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Bunch, went to third on a single by Koopman and scored as the throw from the outfield got away from the TMU backstop.

The Saints tied the game at 3-3 with a run in the top of the sixth on back-to-back doubles by Elbe and Palmer.

In the top of the eighth with the international tiebreaker rule invoked, Elbe moved to third on a ground out, but a strikeout and a pop up back to Long ended the threat.

In the bottom of the eighth, pinch-runner Ellery Garver (Weidman, Mich. / Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart) stayed at second as Long had an infield single.  She moved to third on a fielder's choice and then beat the throw home as Maddie Hool hit a chopper to short to score the game-winning run.

IN THE CIRCLE
Long (4-3) limited the Saints to three earned runs on eight hits in eight innings.  She struck out five and walked one.

Kylie Ropp started for Thomas More and allowed three earned runs on five hits in five innings with one strikeout and one walk.  Kendyl Feutz (0-2) allowed the unearned run in the eighth in her 2.1 innings of work.  Feutz struck out two but allowed three hits.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Long went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while five other WSU batters had one hit apiece.

LEADING THE SAINTS
Loghan Cromer, Elbe and Palmer each had two hits, with Elbe scoring twice and Palmer driving in two.
