Softball Drops Two Games By Identical 9-4 Scores on Day Two of Florida Trip

MELBOURNE, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball team (6-7 overall) dropped a pair of 9-4 decisions on Saturday at the Space Coast Games.  Franklin Pierce (9-1 overall) won the opener, while in-region foe Ohio Dominican (7-8 overall) took the nightcap.

The first two batters for the Ravens reached in the top of the first on a leadoff single by Savannah Arreguin and a walk.  After a fly out, Delaney Duford hit her first home run of the season to make it 3-0 on a 3-2 offering.

WSU battled back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame.  Sophomore shortstop Hunter Near (Coopersville, Mich.) launched a 2-1 pitch over the left centerfield fence to start the inning.  Freshman right fielder Brooke Bunch (Almont, Mich.) followed with a double.  Following two outs, a pop fly was dropped allowing Bunch to score.

Franklin Pierce tallied six runs in the top of the second on three singles, a double, three walks and a hit by pitch.  Zoey Galindo had a two-run single off the pitcher's glove to make it 5-2 and Alicia Ott contributed a two-run double to increase the margin to seven at 9-2.

The Warriors scored their final two runs in the fifth.  Near drew a one-out walk, and moved up to second on a single by Bunch.  After Near was forced out at third, an infield single by sophomore third baseman Kate DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) loaded the bases.  Senior second baseman Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) had a two-run single to right to complete the scoring.
