Softball Splits In Florida

WSU falls 4-3 to Minnesota State-Mankato, but erupts for 11 runs in win over Saint Michael's.

MELBOURNE, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball team (7-8 overall) went 1-1 on the next to last day of its spring break trip.  The Warriors fell 4-3 to Minnesota State-Mankato (11-10 overall) in the opener, before upending Saint Michael's (1-4 overall) 11-5 in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP
WSU had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the first on an infield single by freshman right fielder Brooke Bunch (Almont, Mich.), a single to right by sophomore third baseman Kate DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) and a five-pitch walk to junior pitcher Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.).  Unfortunately an infield fly pop up and a strikeout ended the threat.

Long had retired the first six Maverick batters until a leadoff single in the bottom of the third.  After a sacrifice bunt, Maddie Helin scored on an RBI single by Chloe Brandt to make it 1-0.

Wayne State rallied with three runs in the top of the fourth as Long had a leadoff double, moved to third on a single by senior second baseman Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) and scored on an RBI double by junior first baseman Molly Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) to knot the game at 1-1.  A bunt by sophomore catcher Abby Barnes (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Northview) went over the pitchers head for an infield single plating Maddie Hool with the go-ahead run.  On the ensuing pitch, Barnes stole second with the MSUM catcher trying to throw behind the runner at third but the errant pickoff attempt allowed Molly Hool to score.

Mankato pulled within 3-2 in the fourth on a two-out triple by Nyah Hulbert and an RBI single by Helin.

In the bottom of the fifth, a hit by pitch was called for the leadoff batter although based on the velocity the ball moved it appeared to hit the end of the bat.  A sacrifice bunt and a ground out moved Ireland Broderick to third.  Another hit by pitch, preceded a two-run double by Hannah Tong which gave the Mavericks a 4-3 advantage.

Bunch had a one-out single in the seventh, moved to second on a wild pitch, but was stranded.

IN THE CIRCLE
Long (4-5) allowed four earned runs on five hits in six innings with three strikeouts to zero walks.

Maddie Oetzmann (6-3) surrendered three earned runs on eight hits in seven innings.  She struck out six and walked one.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Bunch was the lone WSU batter with a multiple-hit affair, while Long had a double and reached via a walk.

LEADING THE MAVERICKS
Helin had two hits, a run scored and an RBI.

GAME TWO RECAP
Wayne State scored four times in the bottom of the first for the early advantage.  Sophomore shortstop Hunter Near (Coopersville, Mich.) was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt by Bunch.  Bunch scored on DeWitt's second round tripper of the season.  Junior first baseman Lexi Mielke (Standish, Mich. / Standish-Sterling [Mid Michigan C.C.]) had originally grounded out on a 2-0 offering, but an illegal pitch call made it a 3-0 count.  Mielke then laced a 3-1 delivery down the right field line for a triple.  Mielke would score on an infield single by Maddie Hool.

The Purple Knights answered in the top of the third by scoring four times to knot the game at 4-4.  A walk, followed by three consecutive singles, and a sacrifice fly made it 4-2, before Madi Liimatainen hit a two-run double to right center.

WSU regained the lead in the bottom of the third on a leadoff single by DeWitt, who would later score on a wild pitch to snap the 4-4 deadlock.  Maddie Hool tripled to right center and scored on a passed ball.

In the fourth, Bunch had a two-out double and scored on a single by DeWitt to make it 7-4.

The Warriors extended the margin to 8-4 in the fifth as senior Kennedy Cole (Hopkins, Mich. / Wayland Union [Kent State]) had a leadoff single, stole second and scored on a double by Maddie Hool.  An infield single by freshman Ellery Garver (Weidman, Mich. / Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart) plated Maddie Hool.

Saint Michael's scored an unearned run in the top of the sixth, but Wayne State scored twice in the bottom of the frame.  Mielke had a one-out single and scored when freshman Marin McCullough (Battle Creek, Mich. / Lakeview) hit an inside the park home run as the center fielder's attempt to making a diving catch allowed the ball to roll to the fence.

IN THE CIRCLE
Junior Kyra Shadduck (DeWitt, Mich. [Lansing C.C.]) notched her first win as a Warrior.  She allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits, while tossing her first complete game of the season.  She struck out four and walked two.

CJ Davidson (1-2) surrendered 11 runs (10 earned) on 16 hits in six innings.  She struck out one and did not walk a batter, but seven hits went for extra bases.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Maddie Hool went 3-for-3 with a single, a double and a triple and two runs scored, while DeWitt was 3-for-4 with three RBI And two runs scored.  Mielke, Addison Cosgrove (Troy, Mich. / Athens), and junior Mia Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) each had two hits.

LEADING THE PURPLE KNIGHTS
Brooke Edgerly had two hits and scored once, while Ciara Flaherty had two hits, including a double.

WAYNE STATE NOTES
The 11 runs match a season high, and marks the third time the Warriors have scored at least 10 runs in a game.  The inside-the-park home run by McCullough is believed to be the first by a WSU player since at least 2000.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will conclude its spring break trip with a pair of contests on Tuesday.  WSU will face Saint Anselm (7-7 overall) at 10 AM, followed by a 2:30 PM contest against Minot State (14-8 overall).
