Women's Basketball Falls 90-70 to No. 2-Grand Valley State in NCAA Round of 32

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The No. 4-seeded Wayne State University women's basketball team (24-8 overall) fell 90-70 at top-seeded Grand Valley State University (32-1 overall) on Saturday in the NCAA Round of 32.

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
Gabi Lutchka (Grass Lake, Mich.) began the game's scoring with a mid-range jumper, before GVSU ripped an 11-0 scoring run for an 11-2 advantage.  WSU responded with a 16-5 spurt to take an 18-16 advantage with two minutes remaining.  Molly Anderson (GVSU) tied the contest with a lay-in, but a Taylor Thompson (Grand Blanc, Mich.) jumper put Wayne State ahead 20-18.

SECOND QUARTER
A pair of free throws from Nicole Kamin (GVSU) knotted the game at 20 points a piece.  Four-straight points for McKenna Ferguson (Grandville, Mich. / Byron Center) gave WSU a 24-20 advantage.  Five points for the Lakers put them back on top, but lay-ups from Thompson and Ferguson made it 28-25 in favor of the Green and Gold. 11 points for the Lakers and 10 for the Warriors pushed the score to 38-36 with Wayne State leading.  Grand Valley State tallied 11 of the final 13 points of the half, including a buzzer-beating floater from Kamin.  GVSU led 47-40 after 20 minutes of action.

THIRD QUARTER
Thompson went 1-of-2 from the charity stripe, and found the bottom of the net on a lay-up to shorten the gap to four points (47-43), but five-straight GVSU points made it 52-43.  Ferguson connected on a pair from the free throw line to make it 52-45, before back-to-back lay-ins for the Lakers extended their lead to 11 (56-45).

Thompson brought the Warriors within single digits (56-47) with a jumper.  GVSU out-paced Wayne State 10-7 to close the period, as the hosts led 66-54 entering the final frame.

FOURTH QUARTER
The teams went back-and-forth to begin the final stanza, with the Green and Gold notching five points and the Lakers tallying six, as Grand Valley State led 72-59.  GVSU edged Wayne State 18-11 to close the contest, including the final eight points, as the Warriors fell 90-70.

Wayne State extends its streak of winning seasons to seven as the squad finished 24-8 on the year.  This season marks just the fourth time that a Wayne State basketball team (male or female) has played in 32 contests and the second time that the women's squad has accomplished this feat.  The first 32-game campaign came during the 1992-93 season when current women's hoops assistant coach Andy Ayrault served as a team captain, followed by a 2004-05 season that saw the WSU men advance to the Regional Final (Sweet 16) game.  Last year, the women's squad advanced to the NCAA Round of 32.
