Women's Tennis Defeated 7-0 at No. 2-Barry

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The No. 41-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis team (3-4 overall) fell 7-0 at defending National Champion No. 2-ranked Barry University on Monday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
Barry grabbed the first advantage, securing the doubles point by winning 2-of-3 matches.

At the No. 2 slot, Barry's Dana Heiman and Jenifer Anger topped WSU's Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt / Lycée Français d'Alexandrie) and Selin Kayakent (Bursa, Turkey / Bilfen Anatolian) 6-1.

Shantala Uzcategui (Hoyo de La Puerta, Venezuela / Unidad Educativa Colegio Madre Matilde [Walsh]) and Rebecca Laynes (Saginaw, Mich. / Heritage) fell 6-2 to Viktoriia Dema and Anastasia Nikolova in the third doubles position.

Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que. / Collège de Montréal High School) and Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland / Sopocka Akademia Tenisowa) were tied 4-4 with Ailen Crespo and Louane Lutringer at the top flight, before the match went unfinished.

SINGLES
Arafat battled with Crespo in the No. 1 position, ultimately falling 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-5).

Szpakowska was matched with Dema at the No. 2 position, being bested 7-6 (7-2), 6-4.

Freshman Kayakent, in the No. 3 singles position, was defeated by BU's Alina Michalitsch 6-4, 6-3.

Beaulieu fell 6-3, 7-5 at the No. 4 singles slot to Jenifer Anger.

Uzcategui competed against Nikolova in the No. 5 position, falling 6-3, 6-4.

Freshman Laynes saw action in the No. 6 singles position, but was defeated 6-0, 6-0 by Lucie Brun.

UP NEXT
The women's tennis team will return home to host Oakland University on Saturday, March 21, inside the Duchene Athletic Facility.  The match is set to begin at 12:00 PM.
