Softball Concludes 4-4 Spring Break Trip With Extra Inning Triumph

MELBOURNE, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball team (8-9 overall) went 1-1 during the final day of its spring break trip at the Space Coast Games.  The Warriors lost 6-3 to Saint Anselm (8-7 overall) in the morning, then went extra innings to defeat in the afternoon to defeat Minot State (15-9 overall) 4-2 in eight innings.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Hawks took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a solo home run by Rose Reitmeyer on the second pitch of the game.

Saint Anselm extended its lead to 3-0 in the fourth on a two-run home run by Abby Wrinn following a one-out double by Katie Fox.

SAC increased its lead to 4-0 on a solo home run by Reitmeyer with one out in the top of the fifth.

WSU rallied with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.  Sophomore pitcher Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) had a leadoff single and pinch-runner Ellery Garver (Weidman, Mich. / Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart) advanced to second on an infield single by senior second baseman Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.).  Junior catcher Molly Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) then laced a 2-2 offering into right center for a two-run double.  After moving to third on a ground out, Molly Hool scored when a grounder by twin sister Mia Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) was misplayed by the Hawk shortstop to make it 4-3.

In the top of the seventh, with one out and a runner on third Reitmeyer smacked a 3-1 pitch over the left-center field fence for her third home run of the game, and sixth of the season.

IN THE CIRCLE
Koopman (2-2) went the distance for Wayne State allowing six earned runs on 10 hits with seven strikeouts to two walks.

Kendra Lee (5-3) tossed the first four innings for the Hawks blanking the Warriors on six hits.  Mackenzie Bergen notched her first save of the season by hurling three innings.  She allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits with one strikeout.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Maddie Hool went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Molly Hool had two hits and two RBI, and Mia Hool contributed two hits as did Koopman.

LEADING THE HAWKS
Reitmeyer went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBI, while hitting three home runs.  Wrinn had two hits and two RBI, and walked once.

GAME TWO RECAP
Wayne State loaded the bases with one out in the top of the first but a strikeout and a ground out ended that threat.

WSU did grab a 1-0 advantage in the top of the second as Mia Hool had a one-out single to right, moved to second on a two-out single by sophomore shortstop Hunter Near (Coopersville, Mich.) and advanced to third on a single by freshman right fielder Brooke Bunch (Almont, Mich.).  With the bases loaded and down 0-1 in the count, sophomore third baseman Kate DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) singled up the middle to plate Mia Hool but Near was out on a strong throw from the center fielder.

The Warriors made it 2-0 in the fourth as sophomore catcher Abby Barnes (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Northview) had a leadoff single and moved to second on a ground out.  She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore left fielder Julia Sandles (Macomb, Mich. / Dakota) and scored on an RBI single by Near.  A single by Bunch loaded the bases but Wayne State left three runners stranded giving them eight LOB in the first four innings.

The Beavers pulled within a run in the fourth on a one-out single, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI single by Sarah Misner which plated Mallory Hoogensen.  A ground-rule double by Ellington Anderson preceded a foul out to end the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, Minot State had a leadoff infield single by Hoogensen.  Pinch-runner Jorja Franzwa stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt.  She scored the tying run on a suicide squeeze bunt by Misner.

WSU had a leadoff single for the second time in three frames in the top of the seventh, but was unable to push across the go-ahead run.

MSU had a leadoff single followed by a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the seventh, but the next two hitters were retired on fly outs.

In the top of the eighth with a runner placed on second, pinch-hitter Koopman worked a six-pitch walk.  Barnes, who was the placed runner, and Sandles, who re-entered for Koopman, both scored as Near's line drive to left center was not caught by a diving left fielder for a two-run triple.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Beavers went 1-2-3 to end the contest.

IN THE CIRCLE
Senior Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) limited Minot State to one run on five hits in five innings.  She struck out two and walked one.  Junior Kyra Shadduck (DeWitt, Mich. [Lansing C.C.]) earned the win in relief.  She allowed one run on three hits in three innings to improve to 2-1.

Kierra Fourner tossed the first five innings for Minot State and held WSU to two runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts to one walk.  Taylor Kruser (2-5) took the loss allowing two runs (one earned) in three innings on three hits and one walk with two strikeouts.
