Softball Edged Twice On A Pair Of Walk-Off Hits At Davenport

DU won the opener 5-2 and the nightcap 6-5.

CALEDONIA, Mich. -- The Wayne State University softball team (8-11 overall, 0-2 GLIAC) suffered a pair of walk-off setbacks at Davenport University (6-18 overall, 2-0 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon on the first day of conference play.  DU won the opener 5-2 on a three-run home run by Chloe Parker with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.  The Panthers took the nightcap, 6-5, on a one-out two-run double by Lexie McCarty, also in the bottom of the seventh.

GAME ONE RECAP
WSU scored the game's first run in the top of the second as junior pitcher Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) had a one-out triple down the right field line.  She scored on a two-out double down the left field line by junior first baseman Molly Hool (Allen Park, Mich.).

Davenport tied the game in the bottom of the frame on a single, a throwing error and a safety squeeze bunt off the bat of Alex Rendon.

In the top of the fifth, WSU sandwiched two singles - by Molly Hool and junior center fielder Mia Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) around a foul out - but were unable to score the go-ahead run after a sacrifice bunt and a foul out.

DU went ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth as the leadoff batter reached on an error, stole second and went to third on another Warrior miscue, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Parker.

Wayne State was able to score the equalizer in the top of the seventh as Molly Hool had a leadoff double, and pinch-runner Marin McCullough (Battle Creek, Mich. / Lakeview) scored on a two-out dropped pop up in the infield.

In the bottom of the seventh, a leadoff single, a sacrifice bunt, and a single preceded an outstanding catch of a liner by sophomore shortstop Hunter Near (Coopersville, Mich.).  However, Parker deposited a 2-2 offering on the left field fence.

IN THE CIRCLE
Long (4-6) allowed three earned runs (five total) on eight hits in 6.2 innings.  She struck out two and walked one.

Hannah Tahaney (2-7) limited WSU to two runs (one earned) on five hits in seven innings.  She struck out six and walked two.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Molly Hool went 3-for-3 with an RBI, including two doubles.

LEADING THE PANTHERS
Parker went 2-for-3 with four RBI, while Ally Prasnjak and Lexie McCarty had two hits apiece.

GAME TWO RECAP
The nightcap of the twinbill was a see-saw affair with four lead changes.

Davenport scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 advantage.

Wayne State tallied three runs in the top of third to grab a 3-1 lead.  Sophomore left fielder Julia Sandles (Macomb, Mich. / Dakota) had a leadoff infield single, stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Near.  Freshman right fielder Brooke Bunch (Almont, Mich.) and sophomore third baseman Kate DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) walked to load the bases with two outs.  Junior first baseman Lexi Mielke (Standish, Mich. / Standish-Sterling [Mid Michigan C.C.]) delivered a two-run single up the middle and senior second baseman Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) followed with an RBI single to left center.

DU's Kailyne Lune smacked a two-run home run in the bottom of the third to knot the game at 3-3.  After a walk and a single sandwiched around a fly out, McCarty had an RBI single to snap the deadlock.

In the top of the seventh, pinch-hitter Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) had a leadoff single and Sandles re-entered.  After a pop out, Bunch's RBI double to left center scored Sandles from first to tie the game.  On a 3-2 pitch, senior designated player Kennedy Cole (Hopkins, Mich. Wayland Union [Kent State]) laced an RBI double down the left field line putting WSU ahead 5-4.

Prasjnak started the bottom of the seventh with an infield single as Mielke was unable to make a spectacular catch.  Alaina Schwanke ripped an 0-1 offering through the left side putting the first two runners on.  A sacrifice bunt by Madison Cole advanced both runners, and McCarty hit the first pitch she saw down the right field line for a two-run walk-off double.

IN THE CIRCLE
Junior Kyra Shadduck (DeWitt, Mich. [Lansing C.C.]) hurled the first four innings for Wayne State and allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits.  She struck out two and walked two.  Senior Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) worked the final 2.1 innings and allowed two earned runs on five hits to fall to 0-2.

Schwanke pitched the first three innings for DU and allowed three earned runs on five hits with one strikeout and two walks.  Kayla Widner pitched 3.1 innings and allowed two earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts to one walk.  Hailey Whisman (1-7) recorded the win by retiring both batters she faced in the top of the seventh.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Kennedy Cole and Mielke each had two hits with Mielke driving in a pair and Kennedy Cole recording an RBI.  Bunch reached base twice on a double and a walk and scored twice.

LEADING THE PANTHERS
Chloe Bruman, Schwanke, Madison Cole and McCarty all had two hits, with McCarty recording three RBI.
