Lowery Tosses No Hitter in Series-Opening Victory at Parkside

It was the first nine-inning no hitter thrown by WSU since March 2, 2019.

KENOSHA, Wis. -- The magical beginning to the 2026 season continued into conference action for the seventh-ranked Wayne State University baseball squad (17-2 overall) in its 10-1 road victory over Parkside (11-6 overall) on Friday afternoon.  In his fifth start as a Warrior, redshirt junior Will Lowery (Grosse Ile, Mich. [Kalamazoo Valley C.C.]) tossed the second nine-inning no hitter in the last 22 years with a 10-strikeout, 119-pitch gem at Historic Simmons Field.

Lowery's line was only blemished by two Wayne State errors (both in the fourth inning that combined to score the lone Parkside run) and one walk in the fifth inning.  He retired the last 13 UWP hitters to seal the deal and improved to a remarkable 5-0 record on the season in five starts.

Wayne State's last no hitter of any kind occurred in Karter Fitzpatrick's seven-inning perfect game back on May 4, 2024, at home against Purdue Northwest.  The last nine-inning no hitter was a combined effort tossed by six WSU pitchers in an 11-0 shutout at Missouri-St. Louis on March 2, 2019.  Those were the last no hitters for the baseball program in the last 22 years, since Wayne State Hall of Fame inductee Kyle Hill's seven-inning no-no against Mercyhurst on March 28, 2004.

Lowery received plenty of help from his offense, which allowed him to cruise through the Parkside lineup without many challenges.  The Green and Gold scored three runs in the third, two each in the second, seventh, and eighth, before tacking on the 10th run in the final frame.

The Warriors opening salvo was fired when Brayden Crowe (Brighton, Mich. / Hartland) grounded out to plate Tony Hatzigeorgiou (Oxford, Mich.).  Brady Blakita (Canton, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) followed with a run-scoring single to drive in Rhett Roeser (New Baltimore, Mich. / Warren De La Salle)

WSU's three runs in the third were provided by a fielder's choice by Roeser, an infield single by Crowe with the bases loaded, and a walk drawn by Blakita to force in Roeser.

After the Rangers scored their only run via two errors in the 4th to make the score 5-1, Wayne State went back to work in the seventh.  Caleb Sanders (Eastpointe, Mich. / Detroit Edison Public School Academy [Dayton]) doubled home Roeser after the latter had singled to start the inning, while Alfredo Velazquez (Livonia, Mich. Brother Rice [Michigan]) added the sixth run via a sacrifice fly to score Sanders.

A Parkside throwing error aided the Warriors' two runs in the eighth, before Bennett Hitzelberger (Richmond, Mich.) finished the WSU barrage with a sac fly of his own in the top of the 9th.

Lowery finished the job from there, as he punched out both UWP's Max Johnson and pinch hitter John Wubben for his ninth and 10th strikeouts to conclude a historic evening.

Almost lost in the effort was the note that the victory was Wayne State's ninth-straight win, which continued the team's best start to a season in program history at 17-2.  The Warriors will remain in Kenosha, Wis., for games two and three of the weekend set on Saturday afternoon.  First pitch for the doubleheader is slated for 2 p.m. Eastern time, as the Warriors will look for an even 10 wins in a row in game one of the double dip.
