Baseball Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader Over Parkside, Runs Winning Streak to 11

Wayne State will look for the four-game sweep on Sunday at 19-2 overall and 3-0 in GLIAC play.

KENOSHA, Wis. -- Same story, different day for the seventh-ranked Wayne State University baseball team (19-2 overall, 3-0 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon as the Warriors swept a conference double dip over Parkside (11-8 overall, 0-3 GLIAC), 6-2 and 17-7 (seven innings for both games).  WSU and UWP will wrap up their four-game set on Sunday with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. Eastern time.

GAME ONE
Wayne State opened the scoring with two runs in the second as Brady Blakita (Canton, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) singled in Drew Hill (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North), while Brayden Crowe (Brighton, Mich. / Hartland) forced in Tony Hatzigeorgiou (Oxford, Mich.) with a sacrifice fly to right-center field.

Parkside scratched one across in the home half of that inning, but the Warriors weren't done.  In the fifth, Bennett Hitzelberger (Richmond, Mich.) and Owen Tuccinardi (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline) hit back-to-back home runs and WSU's lead was back to four at 5-1.

In the sixth, Ty Garza (Grosse Ile, Mich. [Barton College]) reached on a two-out fielding error by the third baseman, which allowed both Nick Sandiha, Jr. (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Brother Rice [Macomb C.C.]) and Blakita to cross home plate.

Trailing 6-1, the Rangers would go on to make it a four-run affair in the seventh, but that would be it for the home team.

Despite not being mentioned above, Rhett Roeser (New Baltimore, Mich. / Warren De La Salle) was the lone Green and Gold hitter with multiple hits as he went 3-for-3 at the dish.

Gavin Nash (Howell, Mich. / Hartland) went the distance and improved to 2-2 in the process.  Nash gave up two runs (one earned run) on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts on 91 pitches.  Prior to his last start, the redshirt sophomore had never lasted longer than six innings before doing so in back-to-back outings.

GAME TWO
Wayne State poured it on in the nightcap, but didn't do so for the first three innings.  The Warriors then racked up eight runs in the fourth, six in the fifth, and three more in the sixth.  Parkside's seven scores included one in the second and the other six in the sixth.

Eight WSU batters collected a hit, six of which turned in multi-hit performances.  Those six were Hatzigeorgiou at 4-for-5, Sandiha, Jr. at 4-for-5, Tuccinardi at 2-for-2, Roeser at 2-for-4, Caleb Sanders (Eastpointe, Mich. / Detroit Edison Public School Academy [Dayton]) at 2-for-4, and Hitzelberger at 2-for-5.

The Green and Gold's eight-run fourth was started by a three-run blast courtesy of Sandiha, Jr., which was his first home run as a Warrior and first of the season.  After Tuccinardi's infield knock plated the fourth run, Hill broke it open with another three-run homer to make it 7-1 in favor of the guests.  The blast was Hill's fifth of the season, which ranks tied-for-second on the Warriors.  Not to be outdone, the third WSU home run of the fourth frame came on a solo shot from Hatzigeorgiou, which was his second of 2026.

The remarkable home-run barrage continued into the following inning via a third three-run homer courtesy of Sanders (his first of the season), a solo dinger from Hitzelberger (his fifth), and the second HR of game two for Hatzigeourgiou, this time of the two-run variety for his third of the year.  Hatzigeorgiou had more home runs in game two's seven-inning affair (two) than he his in the previous 20 games combined (one).

With the score now at 14-1 WSU following all the Wayne State homers, Hitzelberger then tripled home two with a shot down the right-field line.  Tuccinardi walked with the bags full to force home the 17th and final Warrior run.

Parkside put together an aforementioned six-run sixth, but it would not be close to enough as the Warrior cruised to the 10-run win by hitting six home runs.

Keegan Pulford-Thorpe (Aurora, Ont. / Newmarket [Central Florida / Georgia Highlands College]) tossed 5.2 innings and improved to 3-0 on the season.  He allowed nine hits, seven runs, two walks, and struck out nine.  Oscar Pace (Brighton, Mich. / Hartland) cleaned up the rest of the sixth (0.1 IP), before TJ McAllister (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / South Lake) worked a clean seventh with two punchouts.
