Baseball Suffers 9-4 Defeat at Davenport

The Warriors led 4-2 before the Panthers scored seven runs in the fifth through eighth innings.

CALEDONIA, Mich. -- The No. 7 Wayne State University baseball team (20-4 overall, 4-2 GLIAC) was ahead of Davenport (13-15 overall, 5-1 GLIAC) 4-2 entering the bottom of the fifth inning on Saturday afternoon at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex.  However, the Panthers proceeded to score seven unanswered runs in the fifth through eighth frames to beat the Warriors 9-4 and even up the series at one game apiece.

Wayne State struck first in the opening inning when Bennett Hitzelberger (Richmond, Mich.) hit a solo home run to right-center field, his sixth of the season, which is tied for the team lead.

Davenport tied the ledger up at 1-1 in the home half of that frame before Ty Garza (Grosse Ile, Mich. [Barton College]) put the Warriors back ahead 2-1 in the second thanks to a solo blast to dead center field.  For Garza, that shot was his second of the spring and first since March 10.

Again though, the Panthers had an answer in the bottom of the third on an RBI groundout for the contest's second deadlock, 2-2.

Two innings later, Drew Hill (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) singled in Hitzelberger, Rhett Roeser (New Baltimore, Mich. / Warren De La Salle) forced in Owen Tuccinardi (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline) with a sacrifice fly to right and WSU's advantage stood at 4-2.

However, that would account for all of the Green and Gold's scoring as the home team responded with one run in the fifth, four in the seventh and two more in the eighth.

Keegan Pulford-Thorpe (Aurora, Ont. / Newmarket [Central Florida / Georgia Highlands College]) received a no decision after five frames and 71 pitches.  Pulford-Thorpe gave up three runs, two earned, on seven hits with two walks.

First in relief, Coy Plummer (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) tossed a near-perfect sixth on 18 pitches with two punchouts to his name.

After Will DeMasse (Macomb, Mich. / Dakota) was unable to retire a batter (2 ER, 1 BB) on nine pitches, Ethan Getting (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Portage Northern [Purdue Northwest]) threw the day's final two innings.  Getting surrendered four earned runs on three hits with one free pass and 31 pitches.

These two teams will wrap up their four-game set on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
