Long Selected GLIAC Softball Pitcher of the Week

DETROIT -- Wayne State University junior pitcher Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) has been selected GLIAC Pitcher of the Week for the first time this season and the second time in her collegiate career.

Long finished the weekend with a 2-0 record, a 0.74 ERA, and 22 strikeouts to four walks along with an opponent batting average of .098 (6-for-61).

After allowing a run in each of her first two innings on Saturday against Parkside, Long tossed 17.1 consecutive scoreless innings.  She eclipsed the WSU single-game strikeout record with 18 punchouts in the 3-2 12-inning triumph over the Rangers.  Long then pitched a seven-inning shutout of Roosevelt on Sunday.

Against UWP, she walked Mia Johnson and hit three of the next five batters to score Johnson.  Two doubles in the second plated Parkside's second run.  Johnson finished 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in the game.  Long allowed just three hits in 12 innings and the two earned runs while striking out 18 (previous mark of 17 was set in 2007 by WSU Hall of Famer Molly Yetman).  She walked two and plunked three while throwing a career-high 188 pitches (115 strikes).

On Sunday vs. Roosevelt, Long scattered three singles to extend her scoreless innings streak.  She struck out four and walked two while throwing 114 pitches (72 strikes).

Wayne State is slated to host Ashland University for a non-conference doubleheader at 2:30 PM on Tuesday, March 31 (weather permitting).  The Warriors will resume GLIAC play on Friday with a twinbill at Grand Valley State (3 PM) followed by league doubleheader at Purdue Northwest on Saturday (1 PM CT).
