Softball Falls Twice To Division 1 Oakland University

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (4-5 overall) resumed competition after a 15-day layoff with a pair of losses (2-0 and 6-2) to Division 1 Oakland University (10-8 overall) Monday afternoon at Gary L. Bryce Field on the WSU campus.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Golden Grizzlies scored in the top of the first as Addison Kopp drew a one-out walk, stole second base with two outs, advanced to third on a wild pitch four pitches later, then scored as the Warrior defense executed a rundown play for the third out of the inning.

OU extended its lead to 2-0 in the top of the second on a two-out single by Storm Kentros, a stolen base, and an RBI single by Taylor Carraway.

Wayne State had leadoff singles by junior pitcher Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) in the second, and senior designated player Kennedy Cole (Hopkins, Mich. / Wayland Union [Kent State]) in the third, before sophomore first baseman Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) had a leadoff double in the fourth, but the Warrior bats went 0-for-8 in that span with a runner on base.

Koopman had a two-out single in the sixth, while both sophomore third baseman Kate DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) and Cole had base hits in the bottom of the seventh.

IN THE CIRCLE
Long (3-3) tossed a complete game allowing two earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts to two walks (both in the top of the first).

Kenna Bommarito (4-2) blanked WSU on six hits.  She struck out three and did not walk a batter.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Both Koopman and Cole had two hits apiece, with Koopman notching WSU's lone extra-base hit.

LEADING THE GOLDEN GRIZZLIES
Kentros and Carraway each had two singles, with Carraway garnering the game's only RBI.

GAME TWO RECAP

For the second straight game, Oakland scored a run in the top of the first.  A one-out RBI double by Maggie Murphy plated Brooklyn Plitz, who had led off the game with a single.

Wayne State knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second as DeWitt had a leadoff double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by junior Molly Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) and scored on a fielder's choice with a nifty slide at the dish.

The Golden Grizzlies had five straight hits to start the third inning, which included RBI singles by Kopp and Kayla Turmell, sandwiched around an RBI double by Murphy.  Kentros plated OU's fourth run of the frame with a sacrifice fly.

The Warriors scored once in the bottom of the third as junior centerfielder Mia Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) had a leadoff single, advanced to second when sophomore shortstop Hunter Near (Coopersville, Mich.) reached on a fielding error, and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman right fielder Brooke Bunch (Almont, Mich.).  Hool crossed home plate as Koopman drew a four-pitch walk with the bases loaded to make it 5-2.

OU answered with a run in the top of the fourth on back-to-back singles by Brooklyn Wyczalek and Addison Caldwell, and a two-out RBI single by Murphy.

Wayne State had a leadoff single in the fourth by sophomore Abby Barnes (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Northview), and two-out double in the fifth by DeWitt before the final seven WSU batters were retired.

IN THE CIRCLE
Junior Kyra Shadduck (DeWitt, Mich. [Lansing C.C.]) pitched the first three-plus innings and allowed six earned runs on nine hits with four strikeouts to zero walks.  Koopman retired 12 of the 16 batters she faced scattering three hits and one walk with two strikeouts.

Jessica Nelson (4-1) went the distance for OU and allowed two earned runs on four hits with one walk to three strikeouts.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
DeWitt had two doubles and scored once.

LEADING THE GOLDEN GRIZZLIES
Murphy and Caldwell each went 3-for-3 with a run scored, with Murphy driving in a trio of runs.

Wayne State heads to Florida and the Space Coast Games in Melbourne, Fla.  WSU will play eight games over a five-day period (March 13-17).
