Softball Splits At Roosevelt Behind Long's Shutout

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The Wayne State University softball squad (14-19 overall, 6-8 GLIAC) played the second of three consecutive road doubleheaders on Friday and earned a split at Roosevelt University (9-25 overall, 3-11 GLIAC).  WSU blanked the Lakers 5-0 in the opener, while RU won the nightcap 11-1 in five innings.

GAME 1 RECAP
The Warriors scored once in the top of the first as sophomore shortstop Hunter Near (Coopersville, Mich.) had a leadoff triple and scored on a single by freshman Ellery Garver (Weidman, Mich. / Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart).

Roosevelt had a chance to tie and take the lead in the bottom of the second as a leadoff single by Kennedy Calderon was followed by a double off the bat of Madisyn Schrad.  Wayne State junior pitcher Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) then impersonated Houdini with a strikeout looking, a pop out and a fielder's choice following a walk to keep the Lakers off the board.

WSU extended its lead with a pair of runs in the fifth.  Garver reached on an error and advanced to third on a single by sophomore Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.).  Long then doubled in Garver to make it 2-0, and scored on an RBI double by senior Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) with two outs.

The Lakers had runners at second in both the third and the fifth, but Long kept putting up zeros.

In the top of the sixth, Near had a one-out single, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Koopman.  RU's Rebecca Urbaniak had a leadoff triple in the bottom of the sixth, but a fly out, a strikeout and a ground out ended the threat.

Wayne State added an insurance run in the seventh as sophomore third baseman Kate DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) drew a leadoff walk and went to second on a single by senior Kennedy Cole (Hopkins, Mich. / Wayland Union [Kent State]).  After a lineout, junior Molly Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) singled to load the bases, with DeWitt scoring on a fielder's choice off the bat of sophomore Abby Barnes (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Northview).

IN THE CIRCLE
Long (8-8) blanked the Lakers on six hits.  She struck out six and walked one.

Riley Czarnecki (5-12) went the distance for Roosevelt and surrendered five runs (three earned) on 12 hits.  She walked three and did not strikeout a batter.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Near, Koopman, Long, Maddie Hool and Molly Hool each had two hits in the contest.  Near scored twice, while five different batters had an RBI.

LEADING THE LAKERS
Ella Dvoracek had two hits, including a double.

GAME 2 RECAP
Wayne State again scored in the top of the first as Garver had a one-out single and scored on a two-out triple by Long.

However, unlike game one, Roosevelt scored early and often.

RU tallied two unearned runs in the bottom of the first thanks to an error, and after a pair of outs, three consecutive singles.

The Lakers recorded six runs in the bottom of the second on six hits, two walks and two WSU errors.

Roosevelt added two unearned runs in the third on two singles, and a WSU error.

IN THE CIRCLE
Koopman (2-4) allowed eight runs (five earned) on eight hits in 1.2 innings.  She walked one and did not record a strikeout.  Senior Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) recorded four outs, but allowed two unearned runs on three hits and a walk with two strikeouts.  Junior Kyra Shadduck (DeWitt, Mich. [Lansing C.C.]) notched three outs and allowed one run on two hits, with three strikeouts in the five batters she faced.

Kailey Hancock (4-5) limited WSU to one run on six hits in five innings.  She struck out one and did not walk a batter.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Garver and Koopman each had two hits, while Long drove in the lone run with a triple.

LEADING THE LAKERS
Dvoracek went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while Lundin Cornelius had two hits, two runs scored and three RBI.  Sophia Barofsky went 3-for-3 with three RBI.  Cassidy Sullivan had two hits and drove in a pair of runs.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will conclude the six-game road trip with a Sunday doubleheader at Parkside.  First pitch of game one is slated for 1 PM (Eastern Time) in Kenosha, Wis.
