Women's Tennis Collects 6-1 Win Over Purdue Northwest

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team (6-6, 3-1 GLIAC) nabbed a 6-1 win over Purdue University Northwest (6-12, 1-4 GLIAC) on Friday in the Duchene Athletic Facility.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
WSU swept all three of the doubles matches for the first advantage of the contest.

At the No. 1 position, Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland / Sopocka Akademia Tenisowa) and Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que. / Collège de Montréal High School) defeated Andriantefihasina and Tamiya Lintz 6-1.

Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt / Lycée Français d'Alexandrie) and Shantala Uzcategui (Hoyo de La Puerta, Venezuela / Unidad Educativa Colegio Madre Matilde [Walsh]) impressed in the second doubles position, as the Warrior pair defeated Monti Gay Coello and Haizea Lopez 6-0.

In the third flight, the freshman duo of Selin Kayakent (Bursa, Turkey / Bilfen Anatolian) and Rebecca Laynes (Saginaw, Mich. / Heritage) posted a 6-3 win, defeating Victoria Watine and Lavinia Bortolaso.

SINGLES
At the top singles position, Arafat fell in the opening set 7-5 to Elisoa Andriantefihasina, before rallying to defeat the PNW student-athlete 6-3, 10-6.

Szpakowska defeated Lintz 6-0 in the opening set of the second singles position and was leading 4-0 in the second before her opponent retired.

Freshman Kayakent defeated Watine 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 3 singles slot.

Beaulieu battled with Lopez in the No. 4 singles position, collecting a 7-6 (7-5) win in the first round, followed by a 6-4 win in the second set.

Uzcategui prevailed 6-3, 6-2 against Bortolaso in the fifth singles flight.

Laynes fell in the No. 6 singles position 6-3, 6-1 to Monti Gay Coello.

The Green and Gold will return to the court tomorrow, April 11, as the team hosts Roosevelt University at 10:00 AM in the Duchene Athletic Facility.
