Women's Tennis Defeats Roosevelt 6-1 on Senior Day

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team (7-6, 4-1 GLIAC) defeated Roosevelt University (7-12, 0-6 GLIAC) 6-1 at home on Senior Day.

Prior to the start of the match, Wayne State honored Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt / Lycée Français d'Alexandrie), Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia / Tbilisi Public School N145 [Western Michigan]), Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland / Sopocka Akademia Tenisowa) and Shantala Uzcategui (Hoyo de La Puerta, Venezuela / Unidad Educativa Colegio Madre Matilde [Walsh]) for all that they have done for the WSU women's tennis program.  This season's graduating class has helped the Green and Gold to three-consecutive appearances in the NCAA Championships Quarterfinals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
Roosevelt took an early 1-0 advantage, winning two of the three matches.

In the No. 1 position, Szpakowska and Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que. / Collège de Montréal High School) bested Malena Moya and Ximena Mercado 6-3.

Arafat and Uzcategui suffered a 6-4 defeat to Zeynep Barut and Sophie Christie in the No. 2 doubles slot.

Freshman duo of Selin Kayakent (Bursa, Turkey / Bilfen Anatolian) and Rebecca Laynes (Saginaw, Mich. / Heritage) fell 6-4 to Luciana Trigosso and Nathalie Ramazzini in the third flight.

SINGLES
It was smoothing sailing in singles competition, as the Warriors were able to sweep all six matches en route to the win.

Arafat bounced back after the doubles loss for a 6-0, 6-3 win over Christie, as the pair battled in the top singles spot.

Szpakowska found similar success in singles as she did in doubles, triumphing 6-3, 6-0 over Trigosso in the second slot.

Freshman Kayakent posted her fourth win in a row, downing RU's Barut 6-4, 6-3.

In the No. 4 singles, Beaulieu was victorious over Laker student-athlete Novikova, 7-5, 6-1.

Uzcategui was impressive in the No. 5 singles position, firing on all cylinders for the 6-1, 6-0 win over Ramazzini.

Laynes collected her second singles win of the spring campaign, beating Chavez 6-1, 3-6, 10-4 in the sixth flight.

The Wayne State women's tennis team will travel to Allendale, Mich., next to face Grand Valley State University.
