Women's Tennis Drops 6-1 Decision at Grand Valley State

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The No. 48-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis team (7-7, 4-2 GLIAC) fell 6-1 at No. 19-ranked Grand Valley State University (14-1, 6-0 GLIAC) on Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
The Warriors earned a win at the top doubles flight, but fell at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.

Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland / Sopocka Akademia Tenisowa) and Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que. / Collège de Montréal High School) defeated Valentina Mozas and Natasha Sengphrachanh 7-5 in the No. 1 doubles slot.

Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt / Lycée Français d'Alexandrie) and Shantala Uzcategui (Hoyo de La Puerta, Venezuela / Unidad Educativa Colegio Madre Matilde [Walsh]) fell at the No. 2 spot, 7-5 to Mischa Briggs and Ipek Sakiroglu.

At the No. 3 position, the freshman duo of Selin Kayakent (Bursa, Turkey / Bilfen Anatolian) and Rebecca Laynes (Saginaw, Mich. / Heritage) were bested by GVSU's Rachel Sam and Amanda Diaz 6-3.

SINGLES
Arafat and Sengphrachanh went back-and-forth at the top singles slot, with the Grand Valley State student-athlete prevailing 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

Szpakowska was the only Warrior to post a win in singles, defeating Briggs 0-6, 6-3, 7-6.

Kayakent suffered a 6-4, 6-4 defeat at the No. 3 slot to Mozas.

Beaulieu fell at the No. 4 position to Sakiroglu 2-6, 6-2, 0-6.

Uzcategui and Laynes each were bested at the No. 5 and No. 6 slots.  The redshirt senior fell 1-6, 6-4, 0-10, while the freshman's efforts were thwarted 6-0, 6-0.

The Green and Gold will close the regular season at Ferris State tomorrow, April 18.
