Softball To Visit Grand Valley State on Friday for Lone Games of the Weekend

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (12-13 overall, 4-4 GLIAC) will play its lone games of the week this Friday (April 3) at Grand Valley State University (15-13 overall, 5-1 GLIAC).  The doubleheader starts at 3 PM at the GVSU Softball Field.

Saturday's scheduled GLIAC twinbill at Purdue Northwest has been postponed until Thursday, April 9th with first pitch at 1:30 PM CT at Dowling Park.

SERIES HISTORY
Wayne State holds a 75-70-2 mark in the all-time series vs. GVSU that began on April 15, 1982.  The Lakers have won five of the last six meetings, including eight straight at the GVSU Softball Field.  WSU's last win in Allendale with a 4-0 triumph on March 30, 2021.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Junior Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) was selected GLIAC Pitcher of the Week this past Monday and enters the GVSU doubleheader having not allowed a run for the last 17.1 innings.  She is tied for the GLIAC lead with nine complete games, while ranking third in strikeout/walk ratio (3.50) and fourth in WHIP (1.15).  All three of those marks rank in the top 85 nationally [54th in SO/BB ratio; 62nd in CG; and 81st in WHIP)].

Senior Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) struck out 15 and walked three while tossing 14 innings last weekend.  She is 2-3 on the season.

Sophomore shortstop Hunter Near (Coopersville, Mich.) bats leadoff and leads the GLIAC in triples per game (0.16) and is second in triple (4).  Both of those marks rank in the top 30 nationally.  For the year, Near is batting .316 (25-for-79) with eight extra-base hits.  She also leads the squad in walks (11) and on-base percentage (.415).  Long leads the team in average (.318, 14-for-44) with six extra-base hits.  Freshman right fielder Brooke Bunch (Almont, Mich.) leads the GLIAC and ranks 10th nationally in sac bunts per game (0.32).  Bunch is hitting .313 (25-for-80) with a team-high eight doubles.

WSU leads the GLIAC and is ranked 17th nationally in fielding percentage (.974), tied-for-first in sasc bunts (25, 41st nationally), second in strikeout/walk ratio (2.34, 37th nationally) and third in triples per game (0.36, 26th nationally).

Fifth-year head coach Nicole Tines' squad has stolen 31 bases this year, which is the most since the 2017 team totaled 47 stolen bases.

LEADING THE LAKERS
Freshman shortstop Camryn Hall is hitting a team-best .456 (41-for-90) with a team-leading 20 runs scored.  Senior catcher Elizabeth Wesoloski is batting .398 (33-for-83) and leads GVSU in walks (12), on-base percentage (.500) and RBI (16).  Junior left fielder Faith Edwards is hitting .356 (31-for-87) with 19 runs scored and 10 walks.

Sophomore Karli Dorr is 6-2 with a 1.72 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 61 innings.  She has seven complete games in nine starts.  Senior Nevaeh Ingram has compiled a 2-6 record with a 2.04 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 44.2 innings for 12th-year head coach Dana Callihan.  Freshman Allison Wright leads the GLIAC with a 1.50 ERA in 28 innings.

UP NEXT
Wayne State is slated to play four doubleheaders next week starting with a non-conference affair against Findlay on Tuesday (April 7).  First pitch at Gary L. Bryce Field is scheduled for 2:30 PM.
