Women's Tennis Set to Host Greyhounds and Huskies

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's tennis squad welcomes UIndy and Michigan Tech University on Friday, April 3, and Saturday, April 4.  Both matches are set to begin at 10:00 AM.

LAST TIME OUT
The Warriors fell 4-3 in a hard-fought GLIAC battle at Davenport.

Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt / Lycée Français d'Alexandrie), Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland / Sopocka Akademia Tenisowa) and Shantala Uzcategui (Hoyo de La Puerta, Venezuela / Unidad Educativa Colegio Madre Matilde [Walsh]) all won in singles competition, but Wayne State was unable to nab the doubles point.

SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS
UIndy is ranked 38th in the most recent national ranking by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).  The squad owns a 5-8 ledger this year, most recently besting Tiffin 4-3.

Indianapolis has a pair of First Team All-GLVC honorees returning in Sofia Cardenas and Jimena De Pablos Hernando.  Cardenas has accumulated an 11-2 ledger this year that includes a 7-1 mark in the spring, while De Pablos Hernando is 9-3 with an 8-2 record during the spring.  

Malik Tabet has been at the helm of the UIndy women's tennis squad since the 2012-13 campaign.  He has guided the team to 10 NCAA Tournament berths, seven Great Lakes Valley (GLVC) tournament championships, and one NCAA National Runner-Up finish.

SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
Michigan Tech is 10-3 this year, winning its last seven contests ahead of the contest at Ferris State.

Alexandra Nikonenko leads the way for the Huskies, tallying an 8-5 record this spring, that includes a 7-5 mark at the No. 1 position.

Mike Andrews is in his first year with MTU after leading the Lake Superior State tennis programs last season.

ITA RANKINGS UPDATE
The Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (ITA) released its newest national rankings, with Szpakowska being ranked 51st and Arafat being ranked 59th in the country.
