Men's Tennis Has Six All-GLIAC Recipients

DETROIT -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) announced its men's tennis postseason awards, with six Wayne State University student-athletes garnering All-GLIAC recognition.

The members of the Green and Gold that were tabbed as All-GLIAC performers on the singles side were George Day (Southampton, United Kingdom / Peter Symonds College), Luis Klaus (Brühl, Germany / Archbishop's St. Ursula gymnasium [TH Köln]), Tom Wasner (Altenholz, Germany / Friedrichsort Community School), and Thomas Mathys (Grimisuat, Switzerland / ECCG - Martigny).  Day and Klaus were both voted to the All-GLIAC First Team, while Mathys and Wasner collected second-team recognition.  In doubles, the pairings of Day and Mathys, along with Klaus and Harry Forsyth (Wamberal, New South Wales, Australia / The McDonald College [Mississippi College]) both were named to the second team.  Freshman Warren Gunnar (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Ann Arbor Huron) received an honorable-mention nod.

Day collects his second All-GLIAC recognition in as many years after being named to the second team in singles a year ago.  This season, Day collected a 17-11 overall ledger, including an 11-7 mark in the No. 1 position and a 4-2 record against GLIAC foes.  The sophomore earned GLIAC Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week honors twice this season, first after helping the squad to a win over Walsh, and once more nine weeks later after the team nabbed wins over Purdue Northwest and Roosevelt.

Klaus earns his first All-GLIAC distinction after an impressive second season with WSU.  The graduate student posted a 22-7 record this year that included a 14-4 record at the No. 2 singles position, and a 5-1 record in conference action.  He garnered his first GLIAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week honor after he helped the squad to victories over Tiffin, Hillsdale, and Case Western Reserve.

Sophomore Wasner makes his second appearance on the All-GLIAC Second Team for singles, tallying a 17-8 record this year, with a 5-1 mark in GLIAC action.  Wasner was named GLIAC Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week once this year, after his impressive performances against UIndy and Michigan Tech.

Mathys shined in his inaugural season with the Warriors, being tabbed as a Second Team All-GLIAC performer in singles.  This year, Mathys posted a 20-9 record, including a 13-6 record during the spring across the No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5 spots.  The rookie went 4-2 in GLIAC competition this year.

The No. 1 doubles pairing of Klaus and Forsyth earned All-GLIAC Second Team honors.  The duo appeared in the ITA Cup during the fall campaign after finishing as the runner-up during the ITA Midwest Regional.  Overall, this year, WSU's top doubles flight posted a 21-17 record, going 10-11 during the spring and 3-3 in conference play.

The Warriors' No. 2 doubles squad of Day and Mathys posted an 18-4 record when competing together.  In the spring portion of the season, the pair impressed with a 13-4 ledger, including a strong 5-1 record in conference action.

Freshman Gunnar was selected as an honorable mention for all that he adds to the squad.  The WSU student-athlete tallied a 6-9 ledger in singles this year, appearing in three matches during the spring campaign.
