Men's Tennis Advances to GLIAC Tournament Championship After 4-0 Triumph Over Grand Valley State

MIDLAND, Mich. -- The No. 3-seeded Wayne State University men's tennis team (14-9 overall) avenged its regular season loss by defeating No. 2-seeded Grand Valley State University (11-6 overall) in the second round of the GLIAC Tournament on Friday, to advance to the GLIAC Tournament Championship.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
WSU nabbed two-of-three doubles matches to earn the first advantage of the match, winning in the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.

At the second doubles flight, George Day (Southampton, United Kingdom / Peter Symonds College) and Thomas Mathys (Grimisuat, Switzerland / ECCG - Martigny) posted a thrilling 7-5 triumph over Grand Valley State's Stephen Claassen and Lawrence Ivanov.

Benjamin Hill (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany / Burgau-Gymnasium) and Tom Wasner (Altenholz, Germany / Friedrichsort Community School) also won in a heart stopper, besting Martin Andreu and Denys Zamaraiev 7-6 in the No. 2 doubles position, to clinch the doubles point.

Luis Klaus (Brühl, Germany / Archbishop's St. Ursula gymnasium [TH Köln]) and Harry Forsyth (Wamberal, New South Wales, Australia / The McDonald College [Mississippi College]) battled with Bora Bakici and Patricio Sepulveda in the No. 1 slot, falling 6-4.

SINGLES
The Green and Gold impressed in singles action, winning three matches to clinch the win.

Freshman Mathys continues to have a strong showing at the conference tournament, giving WSU a 2-0 advantage after downing Sepulveda 6-2, 6-2 in the third slot.

Sophomore Wasner had an impressive performance as well, in the No. 3 singles slot, besting Axel Le Ho 6-2, 6-2, in straight sets.

First Team All-GLIAC honoree Klaus was dialed in at the No. 2 position, as he has been all season long.  The graduate student surged for a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Ruiz to clinch the match in favor of the Warriors, sending the squad to the GLIAC Tournament Championship for the fifth-straight season.

Day went back-and-forth with GLIAC Freshman of the Year Bakici, falling 7-6 in the first set and leading 2-1 in the second before the match went unfinished.

Hill won his first set against Castellanos 6-4, and was trailing 2-1 before the Warriors clinched the overall match.

Forsyth dropped the opening set against Martin 6-3, but had captured a 5-3 advantage in the second prior to his match going unfinished.
