Softball Drops Pair on Senior Day To Purdue Northwest

WSU honors senior class prior to game one.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball squad (16-27 overall, 8-14 GLIAC) lost twice at home on Senior Day to visiting Purdue Northwest (25-19 overall, 11-9 GLIAC).  PNW took the opener 7-1, then won game two 4-2.  Prior to game one, the Warrior softball program honored its three seniors - Hayden Batton, Kennedy Cole and Maddie Hool.

GAME 1 RECAP
The Pride tallied three runs in the top of the second on back-to-back- doubles by Olivia Hernandez and Emma Fair to make it 1-0, before and an RBI ground out by Charli Westerfield.  Kylie Dugan had a one-out RBI single to scoring Jadyn Ramer.

Kylie Madura hit a solo home run in the fourth, and Hernandez smacked a three-run home run in the seventh.

WSU's lone run came on the first collegiate home run for senior Kennedy Cole (Hopkins, Mich. / Wayland Union [Kent State]) leading off the bottom of the seventh.

IN THE CIRCLE
Junior Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) allowed seven earned runs on 11 hits in seven innings.  She struck out two and walked four.

Abbey Bond (7-5) limited Wayne State to one run in six-plus innings.  She allowed five hits and three walks, while striking out two.  Hailie Charmat retired three of the four batters she faced.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Sophomore Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) went 1-for-2 with two walks, while Cole reached base twice with the aforementioned home run and a walk.

LEADING THE PRIDE
Gracie Jensen, Hernandez and Fair each had two hits with Hernandez scoring twice.

GAME 2 RECAP
Purdue Northwest snapped a scoreless draw in the top of the third as Fair doubled on the 13th pitch of her at bat with one out.  Dugan had a two-out single scoring Fair with the game's first run.

Madura led off the top of the fourth with a solo home run to make it 2-0.

The Pride tacked on two more runs in the fifth on a two-out RBI triple by Amanda DeBoer, who then scored on a single by Jensen.

Wayne State's first run came in the sixth as sophomore third baseman Kate DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) worked a two-out walk and scored on an RBI double by junior Mia Hool (Allen Park, Mich.).

In the bottom of the seventh, sophomore shortstop Hunter Near (Coopersville, Mich.) had a leadoff double and went to third on errant throw.  Near scored on an RBI ground out by pinch-hitter Marin McCullough (Battle Creek, Mich. / Lakeview).

IN THE CIRCLE
Senior Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) allowed four earned runs on 10 hits in five innings.  She struck out two and did not walk a batter.  Junior Kyra Shadduck (DeWitt, Mich. [Lansing C.C.]) blanked PNW on one hit over the final two innings.

Charmat (7-8) held WSU to two runs (one earned) on four hits in seven innings.  She struck out two and walked three.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Mia Hool had two hits and an RBI.  Koopman extended her on-base streak to 19 games with a hit and two walks in game one, and a walk in game two.

LEADING THE PRIDE
Madura went 3-for-3 with an RBI, while Dugan, DeBoer, Fair and Jensen all had two hits.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will host Grand Valley State for a GLIAC doubleheader on Sunday.  First pitch is scheduled for noon.
