Softball Edged By Identical 3-2 Scores In Both Games Vs. GVSU

Near smacks a home run in each game.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (16-29 overall, 8-16 GLIAC) dropped a pair of 3-2 contests to visiting Grand Valley State University (26-21 overall, 15-9 GLIAC) on Sunday afternoon at Gary L. Bryce Field.  The Lakers scored once in the top of the eighth to claim the opener, then scored twice in the top of the first and added a single run in the third before holding off a late Warrior rally for the 3-2 victory in the nightcap.

GAME 1 RECAP
GVSU's Eliana Eiland had a two-out RBI double in the top of the third scoring Jasmine Mauk with the game's first run.  Mauk had been hit by a pitch leading off the frame.

WSU responded with a pair of solo home runs in the bottom of the inning.  Sophomore shortstop Hunter Near (Coopersville, Mich.) went to right field for her team-leading fourth round-tripper of the campaign with one out.  Two batters later, sophomore Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) extended her on-base streak to 20 games with her first home run of the season.

In the top of the fourth, Kylee Hoebeke had a leadoff single, and scored from first on a two-out double by Allyson Theunick.

Neither team would score through the rest of regulation, however the Warriors had two on with one out in the fourth; and had two on with two outs in the fifth.  Grand Valley's Elizabeth Wesoloski led off the eighth with a single and pinch-runner Carsyn Segorski went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hoebeke, and scored the eventual game-winning run on a single by Grace Usher.

IN THE CIRCLE
Junior Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) allowed just three earned runs in eight innings on seven hits.  She struck out five and walked two.

Karli Dorr (10-4) held Wayne State to two earned runs on eight hits in eight innings.  Dorr struck out four and walked one.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Both freshman right fielder Ellery Garver (Weidman, Mich. / Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart) and senior second baseman Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) each had two singles in the contest.

LEADING THE LAKERS
The only GVSU batter to reach base twice was leadoff hitter Camryn Hall, who walked twice.

GAME 2 RECAP
Grand Valley State jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the top of the first as Hall had a bunt single, moved to second on a hit by Eiland, and scored on a one-out single by Usher.  Eiland crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly by Hoebeke.

The Lakers extended their margin to 3-0 in the third on a leadoff walk to Wesoloski.  She advanced to second on a ground out, and scored on a one-out single by Hoebeke.

Warrior hurler Kyra Shadduck (DeWitt, Mich. [Lansing, Mich.]) retired eight of the next nine GVSU hitters until a leadoff walk in the sixth.  Shadduck left two Lakers on base that inning, before retiring the side in order in the seventh.

Wayne State tallied its first run in third as Near had a leadoff single and scored on a two-out triple by sophomore third baseman Kate DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.).

Near then led off the bottom of the fifth with her second home run of the day to cut the deficit to 3-2.

WSU had two runners on, but a ground ball double play ended that threat.

In the sixth, the Warriors had a pair of singles - by junior Mia Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) and Long - along with a walk to Near to load the bases, but a foul out ended that inning.

WSU tried to rally again in the seventh with a leadoff walk to Koopman and a one-out single by Maddie Hool, but the next two batters were retired.

IN THE CIRCLE
Shadduck (2-4) limited GVSU to three earned runs on six hits in seven innings.  She struck out three and walked three.

Nevaeh Ingram (4-9) went the distance for Grand Valley State allowing just two runs on 11 hits.  She struck out two and walked three, and stranded 11 Warriors on base.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Near went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, a double and a home run, plus reached via a walk.  DeWitt contributed two hits and an RBI, while Maddie Hool and her younger sister Mia each had two hits.  Koopman extended her on-base streak to 21 games with a pair of walks.

LEADING THE LAKERS
Six different GVSU batters had a single apiece with only Faith Edwards reaching base twice (single and walk).
