Softball Falls Twice At Saginaw Valley

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University softball team (16-31 overall, 8-18 GLIAC) concluded the road portion of its 2026 campaign with a pair of setbacks at GLIAC-leading Saginaw Valley State University (33-13 overall, 22-4 GLIAC) on Friday afternoon.  The Cardinals won game one 9-0 in five innings scoring five times in the bottom of the first.  SVSU scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to claim the nightcap 4-2.

GAME 1 RECAP
Saginaw Valley State raced out to a 3-0 advantage just four batters into the contest on doubles by Alana Kimble and Mya Purdy, along with singles by Ella Reifschneider and Olivia Elliott.  The Cardinals added runs on a bases loaded walk to Kate Pnacek and an RBI single by Faith Maloney.

SVSU scored four times in the third inning, all with two outs.  A walk to Pnacek preceded an RBI double by Maloney.  After an infield single by Kimble, Emma Bolding had an RBI single and Purdy contributed a two-run single.

Wayne State had just two base runners in the game - a two-out single in the second by sophomore third baseman KAte DeWitt (Grand Blanc, Mich.) and senior second baseman Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) reached on an error with two outs in the fifth.

IN THE CIRCLE
Junior Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) allowed five earned runs in 1/3 of an inning on six hits and two walks.  Classmate Kyra Shadduck (DeWitt, Mich. [Lansing C.C.]) tossed the final 3.2 innings and allowed four earned runs on four hits.  Shadduck struck out three and walked two.

Kimble (16-7) held WSU scoreless on one hit.  She struck out five and did not walk a batter.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
DeWitt had WSU's lone hit.

LEADING THE CARDINALS
Purdy had two hits and four RBI, while Kimble and Maloney each had two hits.

GAME 2 RECAP
An old-fashion pitchers duel was scoreless through three innings, until Warrior sophomore hurler Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) drilled a 1-2 offering over the left field fence for her second home run of the season which gave WSU a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth, junior outfielder Mia Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) had a leadoff single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore outfielder Julia Sandles (Macomb, Mich. / Dakota [UMSL]) and continued to third on a throwing error by SVSU.  Hool scored to make it 2-0 on an RBI ground out by sophomore shortstop Hunter Near (Coopersville, Mich.).

Koopman had faced just 16 batters through five innings thanks to a caught stealing and a ground ball double play.

Saginaw Valley State had runners at second and third with one out in the bottom of the sixth after a double by Kimble.  An infield single loaded the bases before a foul out.  A two-out fly ball was mishandled allowing three unearned runs to score.  Kenzie Bromley followed with an RBI double to make it 4-2.

IN THE CIRCLE
Koopman (2-6) was the tough-luck loser as she did not allow an earned run in six innings.  She struck out one and walked on, while allowing five hits.

Macy Ireland (14-4) surrendered two runs (one earned) in six innings, while Kimble notched her first save of the season with a 1-2-3 seventh inning.  Ireland allowed three hits, while striking out six.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Koopman had WSU's lone extra-base hit with a home run.

LEADING THE CARDINALS
Olivia Elliott was the lone SVSU player to reach base twice with a single and a walk.
