Softball To Conclude Regular-Season With Back-to-Back Doubleheaders vs. SVSU

WSU will be at home on Saturday for a 1 PM twinbill against the Cardinals.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (16-29 overall, 8-16 GLIAC) will wrap-up its 2026 regular season this Friday and Saturday with a pair of doubleheaders against league-leading Saginaw Valley State University (31-13 overall, 20-4 GLIAC).  Friday's twinbill at SVSU will start at 3 PM, while game one on Saturday at WSU will begin at 1 PM.

SERIES HISTORY
Wayne State and Saginaw Valley State have met 137 times starting in 1982 with the Warriors holding a 77-60 edge in the all-time series.  The Cardinals have 14 of the last 17 match-ups.  SVSU had won 10 straight games at Gary L. Bryce Field until WSU prevailed 8-3 in the last contest in Motown.  Wayne State has a 33-24 record at home against the Cardinals since 1988.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Sophomore first baseman/pitcher Elly Koopman (Hudsonville, Mich.) is currently riding a 21-game on-base streak and leads the squad in hits (40), doubles (11), RBI (22), walks (25), on-base percentage (.478) and batting average (.364).  See chart below for WSU's longest on-base streaks since 2003.

Freshman outfielder Ellery Garver (Weidman, Mich. / Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart) is batting .344 (22-for-64) and has started the last 17 games.  Junior pitcher Sydney Long (Grand Blanc, Mich.) is hitting .320 (24-for-75) with nine extra-base hits, including two home runs.  Sophomore shortstop Hunter Near (Coopersville, Mich.), senior second baseman Maddie Hool (Allen Park, Mich.), and junior center fielder Mia Hool (Allen Park, Mich.) are all hitting over .300 at .317, .314 and .303, respectively.  Near leads the team with 20 extra-base hits (8 2B, 7 3B, 5 HR) and a .572 slugging percentage as well as 73 fielding assists.

Long has compiled a 9-12 record with a 3.60 ERA and 80 strikeouts in 120.2 innings.  She has tossed four of WSU's five shutouts this season.  Juinor Kyra Shadduck (DeWitt, Mich. [Lansing C.C.]) has a 2-4 mark with a 3.99 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 66.2 innings, while senior Hayden Batton (Plainfield, Ind. / Avon) has a 3-8 record with a 5.75 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 63.1 innings.  Batton also has one shutout.  Koopman has thrown 55.0 innings this spring with a 2-5 mark, a 6.24 ERA and 30 strikeouts.

LEADING THE CARDINALS
SVSU is led by junior pitcher/outfielder Alana Kimble and senior pitcher Macy Ireland.  Kimble leads the squad in batting average (.451 / 60-for-133), hits (60) and doubles (10).  Kimble has a 15-7 record with a team-best 1.65 ERA with 104 strikeouts in 131.2 innings with six shutouts.  Meanwhile, Ireland has a 13-4 mark with one save in 21 appearances in the circle.  Ireland has a 1.96 ERA and 120 strikeouts in 117.2 innings.  Four other hurlers have combined for less than 38 innings pitched for fourth-year head coach Ryan Schalk.

Junior Ella Reifschneider is hitting .375 (39-for-104) with a team-best 22 walks for a .507 on-base percentage.  Senior Olivia Elliott has team-best totals of nine home runs and 38 RBI to go along with a .357 average (35-for-98).  Mya Purdy leads SVSU with 14 stolen bases, while Reifschneider and Jenna Morse each have 11 swipes.

UP NEXT
Wayne State is currently seventh in the GLIAC standings.  After Parkside won twice (10-0, 4-0) at Roosevelt on Wednesday, the Warriors will need to win all four games this weekend against Saginaw Valley State, and will need to get some help since both Davenport and Purdue Northwest have 11 conference wins, plus the tiebreaker over WSU (won season series 3-1).  PNW plays Grand Valley four times and two make-up games vs. Ferris State, while Davenport has four contests against FSU.  A win this weekend by the Pride and the Panthers, or a WSU setback would eliminate the Warriors from the league tournament.
