Wasner and Szpakowska Garner GLIAC Tennis Players of the Week Honors

DETROIT -- It was a Green and Gold sweep, as Wayne State University's Tom Wasner (Altenholz, Germany / Friedrichsort Community School) and Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland / Sopocka Akademia Tenisowa) were named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday, April 7.

Wasner garners his first GLIAC Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week honor after going undefeated in doubles and singles against #15-Uindy and Michigan Tech this past weekend.  The sophomore was the only WSU student-athlete to post a singles win against the Greyhounds, as he tallied a 6-2, 6-1 triumph in the No. 5 position after he earned a 6-2 doubles victory with Benjamin Hill (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany / Burgau-Gymnasium).  In the 7-0 sweep over the Huskies, Wasner and Hill notched a 6-2 doubles victory before the Warrior posted a 6-1, 6-2 win in singles.

Szpakowska earns GLIAC Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week recognition after helping the team to a pair of wins over UIndy and Michigan Tech.  In the 5-2 win over the Greyhounds, she posted a 6-4, 6-4 win in the second singles flight, while notching a 6-4 triumph in the top doubles position with partner Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que. / Collège de Montréal High School).  During the 7-0 sweep over MTU, Szpakowska collected a 6-1, 6-1 win in the No. 2 singles slot, while winning 6-1 in doubles with Beaulieu.
