Women's Soccer Announces Schedule For Inaugural Season

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's soccer program will begin its inaugural season this fall under the leadership of head coach Doug Steinard.

The Warriors will play 14 GLIAC contests, plus at least three non-conference games to begin the schedule.  WSU still has one open regular-season date that could be filled later.

"We are very excited for our first season of competition!" exclaimed Steinard.  "The first game ever played will be against a top GMAC team in Northwood, followed by the short trip to Detroit Mercy.  We will conclude our non-conference play with the inaugural contest at the WSU Soccer Complex vs. Ohio Dominican on Sept. 3 at 2:30 PM.

"We look forward to opening GLIAC play on the road at Ferris on Sept. 11.  We will seven home league games against some perennial D2 powers in Northern Michigan, Grand Valley State and Ferris State.

"This is a historic moment for Wayne State.  Our first team will set the tone for everything this program becomes."

As mentioned above, the Warriors first regular-season contest will be at Northwood on August 27th, followed by a cross-town visit to the Titans of Detroit Mercy on August 30th.  The home opener on Sept. 3 will take place immediately prior to the football home opener that evening against Northwood.

WSU will become the 10th GLIAC school to sponsor women's soccer.  The Warriors will play 14 GLIAC matches, including home-and-home with Ferris State, Purdue Northwest, Davenport, Grand Valley State and Saginaw Valley State.  Wayne State will also host Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan, while traveling to Parkside and Roosevelt for single games.

The eight GLIAC teams at the end of the league slate will qualify for the conference tournament, which will be held Nov. 3-6-8 with the tournament championship winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
