Sonia Bayahya Named Second Team All-GLIAC

The freshman played all 26 of the team's rounds wtih a scoring average of 78.2.

DETROIT -- Sonia Bayahya (Casablanca, Morocco / Lycée Français International Louis-Massignon), a freshman on the Wayne State University women's golf team, garnered Second Team All-GLIAC recognition on Thursday morning, as announced by the league office.

Bayahya played in all 26 of the team's rounds as a rookie with 2,032 strokes, good for a a 78.2 scoring average, the ninth-best mark in program history.  In her 10 tournaments played, the first-year Warrior finished in the top 25 for six of them and among the top 10 for three of those six.

After finishing outside the top 25 for three of her first four collegiate events, Bayahya accomplished said achievement in five of her final six tournaments, including a stretch of five in a row.  The highlight of that span came on April 10 at the Walsh/Tiffin Spring Christmas Classic at Hidden Creek Golf Club in Lima, Ohio.  There, she captured Medalist Honors among 41 players with a five-under 139 (71-68).  Not only was that 36-hole mark of 139 the lowest by a Warrior all season (by nine strokes), but those individual rounds ranked first and second, respectively, a chart in which she's also ranked third, tied-for-fourth and tied-for eighth.

Bayahya's five other top-25 showings included the following:  tied-for-fourth of 37 at the Belterra Classic, fifth of 38 at the GLIAC Championship, tied-for-16th of 66 at Northern Kentucky's The Julie, tied-for-20th of 78 at the Warrior Invitational, and tied-for-25th of 70 at the Davenport Panther Invitational.
