Football Adds More Transfers

Butler, Cooper and Fenika to join the WSU football program this month.

DETROIT -- With the start of football camp just a week away, we will continue doing articles on the newcomers.  This second batch of transfers include defensive end JonChevi Butler (Dallas, Texas / Spruce [Nelson University]), wide receiver Jahmari Cooper (Pontiac, Mich. / Lake Orion [Siena Heights]), and safety Kymani Fenika (Herald, Calif. / Liberty Ranch [Sacramento City College]).

JonChevi Butler, DE, 6-3, 235, R-Sr., Dallas, Texas / Spruce (Nelson University)
2025:  Did not see any playing time for Nelson University, an NAIA school in Waxahachie, Texas.

2024:  Played for Waldorf University, an NAIA school in Forest City, Iowa ... appeared in one game (Oct. 26 at Briar Cliff) for the WU Warriors making six tackles (3-3), plus a pass break-up.

2023:  Played in one game for Ouachita Baptist University (Sept. 9) vs. Northwestern Oklahoma State garnering one assisted tackle ... missed the rest of the season due to an injury ... was granted a medical redshirt.

2022:  Attended Jackson State University during the summer term, but took a gap year during the academic year.

2021:  Played in five contests for the De Anza (Community) College Lions in Cupertino, Calif. ... credited with two solo stops.

2020:  No games due to COVID.

2019:  Attended Kilgore (Community) College in Texas part-time in the spring of 2019, before enrolling at De Anza College for the fall semester ... played in three games for the De Anza Lions totaling four tackles (3-1), including three stops vs. Merced.

2018:  Redshirted at Northwestern Oklahoma State University as a linebacker for the Rangers.

High School:  A 2018 graduate of Spruce High School ... posted career totals of 127 tackles (53-74), 14.5 sacks, and 26 quarterback hurries in 35 games ... earned First Team All-District recognition in 2016 ... was a multi-year team captain ... also attended A+ Academy in Dallas.

Personal:  Full name -- JonChevi Butler ... born on November 19, 1999, in Dallas ... son of the late Dorothy Chapman Butler ... has three brothers, Chris, John and Sebastian, and two sisters, Jillian and Jessica ... plans to major in Communications.

Jahmari Cooper, WR, 6-0, 205, So., Pontiac, Mich. / Lake Orion (Siena Heights)
2025:  Appeared in one game for Siena Heights vs. Judson, catching one pass in the fourth quarter for 25 yards from former WSU quarterback Elijah Taylor.

High School:  A 2025 graduate of Lake Orion High School ... was a three-year letterwinner for coach Christopher Bell ... helped the Dragons to a 10-1 record as a junior ... caught the game-winning touchdown pass in the final 90 seconds of a 17-13 win over West Bloomfield in 2023 ... recorded an interception in the final minute of a 35-28 win over Saline in 2023 ... also participated in track ... competed in the 100m dash (11.85), high jump (5-6) and long jump (18-04.75) his last three years at LOHS, plus the 200m dash (25.64) as a sophomore. 

Personal:  Full name -- Jahmari M.C. Cooper ... born on April 8,2007, in Pontiac, Mich. ... son of Henry and Jessamine Cooper Elam ... has two brothers, Jaylin and Jahir ... plans to major in Mechanical Engineering ... first name is pronounced JUH-mar-ee.

Kymani Fenika, S, 6-0, 190, Jr., Herald, Calif. / Liberty Ranch (Sacramento City College)
2025:  Appeared in all 10 games for Sacramento City College ... totaled 48 tackles (29-19), including one for loss along (at Monterey Peninsula) with three pass break-ups (vs. San Jose, at Fresno and vs. Reedley) ... helped the Panthers to a 4-6 record in the 3C2A (California Community College Athletic Association) and a 1-4 mark in the National - Valley Division ... credited with nine tackles (2-7) at Fresno ... notched a season-best five solo stops at Foothill as part of an eight tackle performance ... garnered at least two solo tackles in nine of the 10 contests.

2024:  Played in five games for Sacramento City College ... made three solo tackles in a 24-20 win over Feather River ... totaled a season-best five tackles (3-2) in a 23-13 setback at Sierra ... recorded a season-high four solo stops at Modesto ... also forced a fumble at Modesto, and had two pass break-ups at Reedley ... finished the year with 13 tackles (11-2).

High School:  A 2024 graduate of Liberty Ranch High School ... was a three-year letterwinner for coach Warren Schroeder ... made 28 tackles as a senior with three pass break-ups and one interception, despite missing five games ... recorded 1,332 all-purpose yards as a junior with 46 tackles and four interceptions as the Hawks went 10-1 ...rushed for 145 yards and two touchdowns from his quarterback position in a 2023 win over El Dorado ... notched two interception in a win over Natomas in 2022 ... earned All-Sierra Valley Conference honors ... served as a football team captain ... also competed in basketball and tennis ... received Academic recognition.
