MIDLAND, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's soccer program played its first match in program history on Thursday afternoon at Northwood University, a squad which has qualified for the NCAA Tournament twice in the last three years (2023 and 2025). The Warriors scored twice in the second half for a 2-0 triumph over the Timberwolves.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
The WSU starters consisted of five true freshmen (Olivia Jasniewicz, Molly Labate, Sienna Mroue, Ellie Whalen and Morgan Wilcox), one redshirt freshman (Kate Carrico), a sophomore (Emily Mendrick), two redshirt sophomores (Addison Ayris and Kate Helfen), redshirt senior and team captain (Reagan Brengman), and a graduate student (Mairin Wessner).

Freshman Sienna Mroue (Dearborn, Mich.) recorded the first shot on goal just 8:27 into the contest, and 33 seconds after redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Kate Helfen (Troy, Mich. [Cincinnati]) notched the first save.

Mroue took the first corner kick with Whalen's header going just wide of the net. Mroue had a shot go wide with just under six minutes remaining in the opening stanza. Wessner put a shot on goal with 4:13 left before intermission.

Wayne State had a 9-1 advantage in shot attempts during the opening 45 minutes, including a 3-1 edge in shots goal, along with a 1-0 margin in corner kicks.

Four field players appeared for all 45 minutes - Wilcox, Labate, Brengman and Whalen.

Second Half
The Timberwolves applied the pressure to start the second half and had two shot attempts in the first three minutes.

WSU's best scoring chance to that point came with 39:25 left in the match as Jasniewicz walked around the defender at the top of the box, but NU goalkeeper Lindsay Jacob made an outstanding save to keep the match scoreless.

In the 63rd minute, Wessner recorded the first goal in program history with a shot low to the goalkeeper's left on WSU's 13th shot attempt of the match.

The Warriors increased their margin to 2-0 in the 74th minute as Mroue buried a shot off a feed from Sabrina Gaul.

Goalkeeper Information
Helfen had the honor of starting the inaugural game in program history and was credited with the first shutout in program history, while making two saves.

Jacob turned aside seven Wayne State shots.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will play at Detroit Mercy on Sunday evening. Opening kick is slated for 7 PM at Titan Field. The Titans are 2-2 on the season with wins over Eastern Michigan (1-0) and at Valparaiso (3-2), along with setbacks at Kentucky (6-0) and vs. Toledo (1-0).
