Women's Soccer Improves to 2-0 With 1-0 Triumph at Detroit Mercy

Mroue scores for the second straight contest.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's soccer squad (2-0 overall) played the second regular-season match in program history on Sunday evening at Detroit Mercy.  The Warriors snapped a scoreless tie as freshman Sienna Mroue (Dearborn, Mich.) notched her second goal of the campaign in the 48th minute to provide WSU with a 1-0 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF
Wayne State goalkeeper Kate Helfen (Troy, Mich. [Cincinnati]) made the first save of the match in the 28th minute off a shot by Teagan Ferrington.

Less than a minute later, UDM goalkeeper Eva Hill stopped Mroue's shot to keep the match scoreless.

In the 36th minute, Hill turned aside a shot by freshman Sabrina Gaul (Troy, Mich.).  Gaul's shot attempt in the 41st minute was wide of the mark.

UDM's Elicia Clarkson received her second yellow card of the match in the 29th minute, which put the host Titans down a player for the rest of the match.

Wayne State held a 6-1 shots attempted advantage over the first 45 minutes, including a 2-1 margin for shots on goal.

SECOND HALF
Less than a minute after a Detroit Mercy free kick, Mroue scored the lone goal of the match to the high right corner of the goal after taking a pass outside the box from redshirt freshman Kate Carrico (Brighton, Mich. [Western Michigan]).

Carrico had a shot go wide left in the 56th minute.  Just over two minutes later, a shot by freshman Ellie Whalen (Commerce Township, Mich. / Pontiac Notre Dame Prep) was stopped by Titan goalkeeper Evangeline Lulgjuraj.

UDM had a chance to score the equalizer in the 60th minute but Camryn Pepper's shot was high.

WSU had a chance to extend its lead but Lulgjuraj made two saves in 30 seconds off shots by freshman Molly Labate (Clarkston, Mich.) and Mroue.

Helfen kept the Titans off the scoreboard with a save in the 74th minute off a shot by Kyleen Bradow.  Detroit Mercy's Adey Avey missed the net on a pair of shots in the 77th minute.  Helfen was able to earn the "clean sheet" with a huge save in the 88th minute off a shot by Pepper.

GOALKEEPER INFORMATION
Helfen was credited with three saves in earning her second shutout of the season.

Hill played 51 minutes for UDM and stopped two of three shots, while Lulgjuraj played the final 39 minutes stopping all three shots on goal by the Warriors.

Wayne State will have its first-ever home match on Friday, September 4 at 6 PM as the Ohio Dominican Panthers invade the WSU Soccer Complex.
