Women's Soccer Wins First-Ever Home Match, 4-0 Over Ohio Dominican

Moeller scores twice, while Whalen and Mroue also find the back of the net.

DETROIT -- In the first-ever home match for the Wayne State University women's soccer program (3-0 overall), the Warriors notched a 4-0 triumph over the visiting Ohio Dominican Panthers (1-1 overall) at the WSU Soccer Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
Wayne State had some chances early to tally the first goal, but the Warriors finally broke through in the 21st minute as Kate Carrico's corner kick found freshman Ellie Whalen (Commerce Township, Mich. / Pontiac Notre Dame Prep) at the far post for Whalen's first collegiate goal.  Carrico, a redshirt freshman from Brighton, Mich. (Western Michigan), earned her first career point.

The first half ended with WSU leading 1-0 despite out-shooting the guests 13-0 (5-0 on shots on goal) during the opening 45 minutes.

Second Half
In the 50th minute, WSU redshirt sophomore Addison Ayris (Washington, Mich. / Romeo [Detroit Mercy]) had a throw-in to freshman Sienna Mroue (Dearborn, Mich.) who laid the ball off to sophomore Jenna Moeller (Center Line, Mich. / Warren Regina [Siena Heights]).  Moeller's right footed shot beat ODU goalkeeper Ashley Fancher to her right giving the hosts a 2-0 advantage.

Wayne State added to its margin 11 minutes later as another Ayris thrown-in to Mroue allowed the Warrior rookie to dribble from the left side to the right side and Mroue's shot went in off the post to Fancher's right for her third goal of the season.

In the 65th minute, Moeller recorded her second of the contest after a Panther defender ran into the referee creating space for Moeller to score from nearly 30-yards out.

GOALKEEPER INFORMATION
WSU redshirt sophomore Kate Helfen (Troy, Mich. [Cincinnati]) made two second half saves to earn her third clean sheet of the season.

Fancher was credited with eight saves, four in each half, as the Warriors totaled a 26-3 advantage in total shots attempted, including a 12-2 margin in shots on goal.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will conclude the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 10:30 AM match on Sunday morning at Madonna.  The Crusaders are 2-2 on the campaign after a 3-0 triumph at University of Saint Francis (Fort Wayne, Ind.) this past Wednesday.

WARRIOR NOTES
Mroue has scored a goal in each of WSU's three matches this season and leads the squad with seven points.  Helfen has stopped all seven shots on goal she has faced in 270 minutes this fall in recording three consecutive shutouts.  Whalen was the third different Warrior to notch a game-winning goal (Mairin Wessner at Northwood, and Mroue at Detroit Mercy).  Moeller's two-goal game was the first multi-goal performance in program history.
