Women's Soccer Posts 2-1 Victory At Ferris State In First GLIAC Match in Program History

Mroue scores twice, including third game-winner of the season.

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's soccer program (5-0 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) played its first GLIAC match Friday afternoon at Ferris State University (2-2-1 overall, 0-1 GLIAC) and edged the Bulldogs 2-1 with all three goals being scored in the second half.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
After an early corner kick by FSU, Wayne State freshman Molly Labate (Clarkston, Mich.) put a shot on goal in the seventh minute.  The Bulldogs put pressure on the Warrior defense with three shot attempts in the 13th minute with the final shot, by Emerson Lukomski, hitting the crossbar.

WSU graduate student Mairin Wessner (Northville, Mich. [Dayton]) had a header that was stopped by Ferris State goalkeeper Korinne Ihrke in the 18th minute.

Shortly after a corner kick by Wayne State, a shot by redshirt freshman Kate Carrico (Brighton, Mich. [Western Michigan]) hit the post in the 23rd minute.

WSU had a 6-3 advantage in total shots attempted in the first half, including a 2-0 margin in shots on goal.

Second Half
The Warriors had two corner kicks in the first 15 minutes after intermission before freshman forward Sienna Mroue (Dearborn, Mich.) scored at the 60:07 mark for WSU's first GLIAC goal in program history.  It also marked the fifth consecutive match that Mroue had scored a goal.  Classmate Sabrina Gaul (Troy, Mich.) earned her second career assist on the goal.  The scoring play started with a Wayne State corner kick which was headed into the box and deflected by Gaul to Mroue just oustide the net.

Less than six minutes later, Mroue made it 2-0 for her first career multiple-goal game.  Her unassisted tally came at 65:57.  A long pass by the Warriors deflected off an FSU defender to Mroue who dribbled briefly before striking the ball with her left foot from outside the box into the top right corner.

Just over 90 seconds later, the Bulldogs cut their deficit in half at 2-1 on an unassisted goal by Haley Buckman, who's volley from just outside the box beat redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Kate Helfen (Troy, Mich. [Cincinnati]) to the near post.

Wessner notched another shot on goal in the 75th minute that was stopped.

FSU's Cameron Tack put a shot on goal in the final 3:30, but Helfen was able to make the save.  Seconds later Helfen stopped Lukomski's header to prevent the match from being tied.

Helfen was again up to the task making a save in the final minute on a shot by Avery Sikorski.  Lukomski had a shot attempt in the final 20 seconds but it was off the mark.

Wayne State held a 7-5 edge in corner kicks in the match, while FSU was whistled for 10 fouls to eight for the Warriors.

GOALKEEPER INFORMATION
Despite having her consecutive scoreless minutes end at 337, Helfen earned her fourth consecutive victory.  She was credited with three saves in the match, all in the second half.

Ihrke made three saves as the Warriors totaled nine shots, including five shots on goal.

Wayne State will host its first conference game in program history on Friday, September 18th at 6 PM as the Purdue Northwest Lions invade the WSU Soccer Complex.
