Women's Soccer Extends Unbeaten Streak To Six Matches With 2-2 Draw

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's soccer team (5-0-1 overall, 1-0-1 GLIAC) batted the Purdue Northwest Lions (2-3-2 overall, 0-2-1 GLIAC) to a 2-2 draw Friday evening despite playing down a player for over 62 minutes.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
WSU graduate student forward Mairin Wessner (Northville, Mich. [Dayton]) was pushed down in the box just over four minutes into the match and converted the first penalty kick in program history at the 4:21 mark.  It was Wessner's third goal of the season.

About seven minutes later, Lion goalkeeper Meta Fischer made a save on Wessner's low shot that was a deflection of a pass from freshman Sienna Mroue (Dearborn, Mich.).

Just over 18 minutes into the match, PNW notched its first shot on goal as Warrior 'keeper Kate Helfen (Troy, Mich. [Cincinnati]) gathered in a long shot by Mia Davis.

WSU's Kate Carrico (Brighton, Mich. [Western Michigan]) received a red card in the 28th minute.

Second Half
Fischer made another save on a long shot by Wessner just 65 seconds into the second half.

The Lions tied the match at 1-1 in the 55th minute as Natasha Tanner headed in a free kick by Sarah Scaling.  It was Tanner's second goal of the campaign.

Wayne State regained the lead in the 59th minute as Wessner headed a free kick by senior captain Reagan Brengman (Harrison Township, Mich. / Warren Regina [Northwood]) and put in the rebound off a save by Fisher.

Purdue Northwest evened the score in the 66th minute as Addison Thomas crossed midfield and sent a long ball that found Mia Davis behind the Warrior backline.  For Davis it was her second goal of the season.

Over the final 18 minutes, Wayne State held a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal, but neither team could net the go-ahead goal.

GOALKEEPER INFORMATION
Helfen made two saves, one in each half, to extend her unbeaten streak to five matches at 4-0-1.

Fischer was credited with six saves in the match.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will continue its homestand on Sunday with a 1 PM match vs. Davenport at the WSU Soccer Complex.  The Panthers enter Sunday's match with a 4-1-2 overall record and a 2-1 GLIAC mark after falling at home earlier today 2-0 to visiting Saginaw Valley State.
