DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's soccer team (6-0-1 overall, 2-0-1 GLIAC) remained unbeaten both overall and in league play with a 3-0 triumph over visiting Davenport University (4-2-2 overall, 2-2-0 GLIAC) on Sunday afternoon at the WSU Soccer Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
The ball barely crossed the midfield stripe into WSU's defensive half before the Warriors were able to take a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Jenna Moeller (Center Line, Mich. / Warren Regina [Siena Heights]) sent a pass to classmate Emily Mendrick (Troy, Mich. / Troy Athens [Ashland]), who flicked the ball onto junior Jess Clyde (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron [Schoolcraft C.C.]). Clyde's first shot attempt of the season found the top left corner from 18 yards out just 58 seconds into the match, the quickest goal to start a contest in program history.

There was no other scoring in the opening 45 minutes despite WSU having four other shots on goal to DU's one. Both teams had two corner kicks in the first half and six fouls.

Second Half
Nearly 18 minutes after halftime, graduate student Mairin Wessner (Northville, Mich. [Dayton]) notched her fifth goal of the season beating Panther goalkeeper Elizabeth Wolter to her right from the right flank just inside the far post. Clyde had made a beautiful pass to Wessner. Freshman Sabrina Gaul (Troy, Mich.) had controlled the ball in the midfield and found Clyde on the left side. It was Clyde's second assist of the campaign, which ties jer with Gaul for the team lead.

Less than four minutes later, at the 66:35 mark, Wayne State extended its advantage to 3-0 as Moeller beat Wolter to her right after freshman Maya Bjedov (Brighton, Mich.) had headed down a corner kick by classmate Molly Labate (Clarkston, Mich.). It was the first collegiate assist for both Bjedov and Labate.

GOALKEEPER INFORMATION
Sophomore Kate Helfen (Troy, Mich. [Cincinnati]) made three saves in the second half to finish the match with four saves. It was WSU's fifth clean sheet in seven matches as Helfen improved her record to 5-0-1. She has allowed three goals in 540 minutes with 16 saves.

Wolter was credited with six saves and three goals against.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will conclude its three-match home stand on Friday, Sept. 25 by hosting the Northern Michigan Wildcats. The match time has been moved to a 1 PM kick-off.
